Hotel close to Javits Convention Centre

My husband and I will be in New York early October for a 4-day convention and although the company has supplied names of hotels in the area I would like any suggestions of a good hotel within walking distance and any suggestions for great restaurants in the area.

Many thanks

Nancy

You should be aware that the Javits Center is rather off on its own, on the far West Side. There is probably not much within walking distance. You might wish to propose the names of some the hotels you were given, and you might get responses regarding them, as well as restaurants near them.

Lou is right. There isn't much, if anything, to choose from within walking distance of Javits. The sponsor of the show is probably running shuttle buses from hotels. You might check that out before you decide where to stay.

I would just pick a hotel that you really want to stay at as most hotels are about a 5 minute cab ride away from the Javits Center. Also, any hotels that are in the immediate "area" are a little seedy.

If you stay until the the end of the day, it can be tough getting a cab. So many people are leaving at the same time it may take a while.

I did a show at Javits and wound up walking to my hotel at the end of the day.

You can also take busses from that area. What are some of the names supplied?

A hotel that just came to mind is the Avalon on 32nd St. near 5th av. It's about 6 crosstown blocks to Javits (about 1/2 mile) but in a decent neighborhood and convenient to lots of things (much better area than Javits). There is a crosstown bus on 34th St that can take you to and from Javits. This is a very nice, relativelt new hotel. Includes nice continental breakfast. A very good restaurant nearby is Meli Melo, 110 madison Av. betwe 29th st and 30th st. It has a great value $33 prix fix, or you can go a la carte.

Nancy:
The M42 and M34 both service the Javits.
Both stop inside the building. Usually it is supplemented with extra service during big events.

Consider the Marriot Martquis if it is on your list. A shuttle bus, whatever the convention, usually leaves from the hotel.

The Travel Inn is within walking distance and popular with convention attendees. This is a "nice enough" place with low rates and few frills. Popular with families as well because it has a pool. Also, if you're driving, it's one of the few (if not only) hotels with free overnight parking. As for your list, forget the Hotel Pennsylvania. I would recommend booking soon. We're going in October and rates are the highest I've seen them in quite a while and availability is not plentiful. I booked with Hotwire finally.

From that list--and assuming there's bus shuttles from Javits to the hotels--take either the Marriott Marquis or the Sheraton New York.

The hotel closest to Convention CEnter is the New Yorker. SHuttle buses do run from the Marriot to the convention center.

TO clear up the confusion, I'm talking about shuttle buses hired by the trade show at Javits to run between the convention center and the hotel, not regular city buses! Most major shows provide the service for its attendees.

I stayed at the New Yorker recently. It's a large hotel, some of the rooms have been renovated but others have not. My room was one of the latter, very small, not attractive, but reasonably clean. Many rooms have nice city views. The water pressure was very good. The price, via http://www.tourgang.com, was $99 including all taxes. There's a 24-hour diner connected to the lobby, which was convenient and there's a small fitness room in the basement. If location is all-important, and you get a good price, it could make sense to stay here, provided your expectations don't include anything like "charm."
