hostel or B & B accom in San Francisco

Looking for good, clean accomodation in S.F. does anyone have recommendations for hostels or bed and breakfasts that maybe a bit cheaper than hotels. We are in our early 50's but have enjoyed hostels in Europe and Australia and this may help our budget.

We stayed at the San Remo a few years back. This is a very charming European style hotel with lots of character that is quite reasonable. It is on the edge of the North Beach (Italian) neighborhood, about 1 1/2 blocks from the nearest cable car stop. It is a short walk to Fisherman's Wharf, and a 10 minute cable car ride to downtown. The only negative is the rather seedy looking housing project you walk past getting to Fisherman's Wharf.

We stayed at the Marina Inn several years ago. Good location, clean, nice room and very reasonably priced.

JB, go to www.biddingfortravel.com and scroll way down to, and click on, California-San Francisco hotels. Then click on San Francisco Hotel list. You'll see a long list of hotels that Priceline uses in SF. If you go back one step to the page with the hotel list, you'll find what people have been paying for these hotels when booking through Priceline. You have to do your homework, but there are some good deals available through Priceline in San Francisco. I have no affiliation with either site.

I know where 2 hostels are in SF, maybe there are more? The one on Powell street is a very good location, public transportation is very convenient, inexpensive eating places around. Never been inside.

The one in Marina area, Fort Mason, is in a nice park, but it's an up-and-down walk to everything, you have to be physically fit for this location, it's nice to visit not to stay there, I think.
