Hoover Dam and Las Vegas with tween/teen

Greetings Fellow Travelers:

After we leave the Grand Canyon, we're going to drive to Hoover Dam then on to Las Vegas. We're committing 1 or 1.5 days to Hoover Dam and Las Vegas.

How much time should we allot to Hoover Dam? What all do you "do" at the dam?

What is there to do in Las Vegas for girls aged 15 and 11?

THANKS a lot!!!

(((After Las Vegas is San Diego)))

I would go to one of the Cirque shows in Vegas and then some shopping there. We like the Forum Shopping. But there are plenty of places in Vegas to shop. Probably to a nice restaurant. You might see who is in concert on your day there.

The Hoover Dam Tour includes everything. The Power Plant Tour and the Visitor Center admission are just partial.

If your kids are adventurous maybe one of the rides atop the Stratosphere. I personally don't like Circus Circus.

Where are you coming to the Grand Canyon from? Rental car?
Park on the Arizona side of the dam. Plan on 2.5 to 3 hours if you include the tour down inside the dam.
If you want to visit Valley of Fire State Park, turn off US93 onto the highway that goes up the west side of Lake Meade. From Valley of Fire you can go west to get onto I-15 to get into LV.
In LV the kids should like the Fremont Street Experience.

Cirque du Soleil show would great for your girls. Shopping at Forum Shops or Venitian. M &M store was also a big hit with our girls.

The dam tour (so to speak) is pretty interesting. The best part, in my opinion, is the view from the bottom.

Put a blindfold on your girls while in Vegas. Seriously. It's icky. (And, trust me, I'm not a prude.)

Would also recommend the Siegried and Roy Animal Exhibit at the Mirage. The aquarium at the Mandalay Bay was very nice as well.

My kids enjoyed the comedy guided tour of Hoover Dam - it was called the Hoot and Holler Hoover DamTour. The comedy part was a surprise, and it was priceless to watch the kids' reaction when the tour guide started sounding like she was on strong prescription medication, and the huge grins when both teens realized they got a comedienne for a tour guide.

They enjoyed the Cirque show O, and loved the Blue Man Group (although you can watch this in Orlando, or Chicago, etc.....) We also saw David Copperfield, but if I am to remove one show from the bunch we picked, it would be David Copperfield - I think my kids were a little too old for that, although we did have a good time.....

Oh, I'm sorry, I just realized that you said you're driving to Hoover Dam. The comedy tour I wrote about was a bus tour that picked us up from our hotel in Las Vegas.

Thanks all...that helps a lot.

On the website to Hoover Dam, the tour is "first come, first serve". Is there a point where they stop handing out tickets? Is there an alloted number of tickets per day. It is almost 300 miles/5.5 hours from the Grand Canyon to Hoover Dam. Will there be tickets left when we arrive at Hoover Dam around 2 p.m.?
