i think a lot of those people in sleeping bugs were probably homeless. i'd reconsider or think about having NOTHING on you if you plan on sleeping on the beach in a city... remember, it is a very populated place that comes along with city crime even if it is fabulously beautiful. paradise can be dangerous too.

Sleeping on the beach? - would depend on the area you attempt it - for one thing in many places it would not be safe and in other places I am sure security would come and chase you out -
Its not something I would count on pulling off

Martin-
I am not positive regarding the legality of being able to sleep on the beach - but I am leaning towards it not being legal. Every once in a while there's a news story about the police chasing away the homeless from the various beach parks on the island. I doubt they do this on a regular basis outside of Waikiki, though.
A more important concern would be the safety of such a proposition. I am assuming that if you plan on going on a cruise the next day, you will have luggage with you. To be blunt - a tourist with luggage, sleeping on the beach is a stupendously bad idea.
It's not practical to store the luggage, sleep on the beach and then return to the airport to get your luggage because the cruise ship terminal is in the downtown area.
The beach parks are where you will find many homeless people. The majority of the homeless in Hawaii have drug problems. Violent crime among the homeless is common - often directly linked to their drug usage or wanting money to pay for drugs.
You won't find so many homeless (if any) on the beaches fronting the hotels in Waikiki - but that's because the police and security guards regularly patrol those areas and chase everyone off. They would probably chase you off, too.
Better idea would be to get an inexpensive hotel for the night.
