It is always helpful to include a few details. What is your price range? Do you want to stay in town or outside? Are you going have a car? Do you want self-served breakfast or sit down with other guests at a specified time? Is no breakfast fine with you? Do you want a private entrance, private bathroom? Do you prefer a log cabin? How long are you staying in each place? Do you want an expensive hotel inn or an inexpensive motel? Do you want a view or rather pay less and have no view? What is a main purpose of your visit? For instance, if you are going bear watching from Homer what company are you using and do you want your accommodation to be within a walking distance? In Seward are you taking a cruise to Kenai Fjords National Park? Do you need to be within a walking distance? Knowing all these would help make specific suggestions.

Holiday Inn Express in Seward.
Ocean Shores or Land's End in Homer.

One I would recommend AGAINST is the Best Western-Bidarka Inn in Homer.

Homer is so spread out that I doubt if it will make much difference where you stay. Lands End Resort is at the end of the Spit which has a variety of shops, restaurants, and charter businesses and the popular Salty Dawg Saloon.IMO a good place to visit, but I don't think I'd want to stay there. Nevertheless I think it is one of the better resort type places in the area.
Have a look at Alaskan Suites www.alaskansuites.com

historytraveler,
I agree with your statement about the Homer Spit "... I don't think I'd want to stay there."
When I saw it for the first time, I thought it looked very tacky. (Of course if you visit the Spit, you must make a brief stop at the Salty Dawg Saloon just long enough to buy a T-shirt.)
On the other hand, the Victorian Heights Bed & Breakfast is the only 3 diamond rated AAA accommodation in Homer.

Bill,
I looked at the Lands End Resort website, and it looks great. However, if it is at the end of the spit (5 miles away from town?), is it too far from town to really enjoy Homer?
We stayed at LE when we went to Homer in the winter months to photograph eagles since the Eagle Lady's compound is practically adjacent to Land's End.
When we last stayed in Homer (Sept) we stayed at Ocean Shores, which is relatively cheap (much cheaper than LE) and has great views across the bay, also excellent internet connection (a separate secure account for each visitor) and close to a couple of good restaurants.
Everything is spread out in Homer so you need a car anyway. I liked staying on the spit myself, most of the shops etc are a few miles from LE.
Best Western is on the main highway across from the high school and a bit noisy with all the traffic, with a loud bar adjacent to some of the rooms. Rooms over the office are the best but still you have a lot of street noise. Ocean Shores is a short distance from BW but several hundred yards from the highway fronting the bay, better than BW and also cheaper, a deal that's hard to beat.

In Seward, we loved the Bear Paw Lodge. Outside of town a bit (you'll need a car). Looks like what an Alaskan lodge should look like. Nice breakfast. We enjoyed soaking in the outside hot tub one night!
