Hilton Head Vacation

We are empty-nesters planning a trip to Hilton Head. We've been before with kids, now want to go when it is less crowded (NO spring break) but still outstanding weather. Any suggestions as to what month is best for weather, yet not so crowded?

We went in mid-May and it was terrific. Rent beach bikes so you can ride up and down the beach, or through those gated communities you can't drive a car through without an appointment with a Real Estate Agent. (A pet peeve of mine -- We'll be retiring in 10 years. Why would I want to take up an agent's time now? I just want to see if it's an area I'd consider retiring too when the time comes.) That said, Hilton Head is really lovely in May.

susan,

Have been there in April, which is a little iffy in terms of weather. it can be beautiful, but I have seen it too cold for the beach in April. I would agree that May is a good idea. I also have friends who say that September is a perfect combination of great weather with off season rates. Enjoy!

September is less expensive because that is during hurricane season. There are numerous posts on this site about the risks of traveling during July-November...

In mid-late May is the weather warm enough for the beach?

Should be, but water may be a bit chilly to some.

I have done late May several times and the water has been cool but the sun blistering hot. Probably the reason that there are so many pools on HHI! To me, they have great beaches but the water can also be very rough.

We went in May two years ago and it was perfect. The ocean was like bath water--although I realize that may not have been the usual.

From a 27 year islander: May and October can't be beat.
