snowrooster -- aren't you the same person who posted on the other Myrtle Beach thread about how you'd never even been to MB??? Pray tell, have you ever been to Gatlinburg, either? And now you're giving advice about which resort town would be better for golf, but you don't even golf?!?
Anyway, la dolce vita -- I think it depends on what you want. If it's golf you want to focus on, MB is really a better choice. It has literally hundreds of golf courses. Many are quite challenging and well-maintained. My DH and his buddies go there every year in the spring and play 36 holes a day. It is an extremely popular destination if golf is your focus. You will also find a variety of restaurants there, from chains like Hooter's and Outback to more upscale dining like Greg Norman's new place.
MB also has more to do besides golf, if you're bringing your family or non-golfers along.
HH on the other hand has a number of very nice courses, but not nearly as many as MB. The fees are more expensive. But, the area is more "upscale" than MB -- fewer t-shirt shops, mini-golf places, etc. Also a variety of dining in the area.
My only concern for you about a Sept vacation is that the courses may be played out. Hubby played a course in HH in June and felt it was very tired and in poor shape. I think this may be the case in both MB and HH because the golf season tends to be earlier -- say in the spring -- and the summer heat takes its toll on the greens, etc.

Myrtle Beach is the best resort for golf -- there are over 110 golf courses, and they are building new ones every day.
When I go down there, I like to play at Myrtlewood -- they have 2 courses, the PineHills and Palmetto.
September is a good time of the year as most of the families have headed home because of school.
Myrtle Beach has something for everyone. I've never found anything quite like it as far as activities for the entire family.

Hey lisettemac
What's your problem? The person asked about golf and I don't golf so I admitted that. You too said in your post that Hilton Head is higher end than Myrtle Beach how about chilling out? It's not like it isn't common knowledge - haven't you ever heard Myrtle Beach referred to as the "redneck riviera?" That's what folks around here call it. Oh, yes, I went to Gatlinburg less than a year ago, thanks for asking.
Aren't you the one GoTravel said just likes to stir up controversy? This isn't the place. If you want to argue, may I suggest the bulletin boards at www.slate.com - your nasty attitude isn't appropriate here.

Opine? Not sure what that means. I didn't ask for your thoughts on my feedback and I didn't pretend to know about something I didn't. Chill out. Sounds like you need a week at the redneck riviera so you can polish off some greasy wings at Hooters - no thanks. That's my opinion. Don't like, fine, you don't have to.

Not to jump into the middle of a food fight, but what's wrong with greasy wings at Hooters?
You can certainly have your opinion, but if you've never been to Myrtle Beach, you have no basis for it. Don't knock it 'til you tried it.

snowrooster, I just have to laugh!
Let me see if I've got this right...
You've never been to Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach, but you are giving out your opinions about them as vacation destinations and making disparaging comments about MB? (Redneck Riviera?)
Now didn't you recently return from Dollywood? Now what 5 star property did you stay at while you were there?
btw:
opine
\O*pine"\, v. t. & i. [imp. & p. p. Opined; p. pr. & vb. n. Opining.] [L. opinari, p. p. opinatus; akin to opinus (in comp.) thinking, and perh. to E. apt: cf. F. opiner.] To have an opinion; to judge; to think; to suppose. --South.

Nothing, if you like greasy wings (I'm not a wing fan). Like I said (not sure if it was in this thread), though I have not been to Myrtle Beach I have been to Hilton Head and have heard feedback from many people who have been to both. My husband has been to both HH and MB - am I not allowed to share what he has told me because I didn't experience it first hand? I never personally attacked anyone - some people are just all in a huff because the feedback I shared (albeit admittedly second hand) wasn't positive. Sorry.

Hey Diana - Read much? I have been to Hilton Head several times and my husband has been to both and shared his thoughts w/me. I guess it's not okay to pass on the opinions of our spouses even when we admit they are not are own? Did you make up this rule yourself??
We rented a cabin between Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge. Happy now?

snowrooster, you need a vacation badly!
(Maybe then you won't be so cranky.)

I saw in one of your posts that you prefer double cheeseburgers, so I can see why you would disparage wings.
Actually, opine can be used in this manner as well (it was used correctly):
o?pine ( P )
v. o?pined, o?pin?ing, o?pines
v. tr.
To state as an opinion.
v. intr.
To express an opinion: opined on the defendant's testimony.

Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head are two different oceanfront resort towns on the coast of South Carolina with golf.
You cannot beat the quality or quantity of courses in Myrtle Beach.
I live much closer to Hilton Head than I do Myrtle Beach but my family has vacationed on Pawleys Island, which is part of the Grand Strand all my life and most of my parents life.
Hilton Head is more upscale, not as much to do, much more spendy golf crowd.
Myrtle Beach is a family town. Great golf, lots of fun.
Let's please not make derogatory remarks about Myrtle Beach. It really doesn't help anyone and it isn't the redneck riviara.
There is a small part of MB that is being cleaned up and revamped that was formerly iffy. This is a fraction of MB, maybe 5 miles of coast.
MB is so diverse and so big you cannot generalize.
The Grand Strand is 60 miles long.

GoTravel,
Nice post...lots of good info in there.
Bottom line, as Go Travel and others have commented, both of these destinations are very popular because they are a good fit for a great many people.
The OP asked about a GOLF destination, and those who have that knowledge did a great job of summing up their impressions of where to go for that activity.
Have a nice trip la_dolce_vita!

My wife and I have been to both within the year. All of the objective comments above are correct. Neither of us golf but I like HH and my wife likes MB.To me, HH is much, much nicer, the golf courses have a little less competition but it does not have the large music theaters of MB. I would suggest that an evening in Savannah far surpasses the music choices but we're all different. Please remember the threat for hurricanes in Sept. & perhaps consider which reservation would be least restrictive in case of bad weather.

Hi, I HAVE to agree with snowrooster. I live in MN and my first trip to SC was to Myrtle Beach with adult kids. We have all travel many places and from what we had read we expected mb to be very similar. What a disappointment. The beach and weather were the only good things. The place was sleezy, dirty, and just generally nasty. We went in Dec and almost all restaurants and shops were closed. The relatives living in SC actually laughed at us for going to MB. They said no Carolinian goes there. We now go to the Isle of Palm or Grand Cayman.

I think it really depends on what you are looking for. Myrtle Beach has some very nice sections up north around the Briarcliffle area and Kingston Plantation. Grande Dunes is also very nice. There are some very expensive developments in these areas where you do not find trailer trash only.
I must admit that when my parents first bought a place at MB in Kingston Plantation, I was embarassed that they had chosen MB, instead of a less crowded, tacky location. I was surprised at the number of nice restaurants that are there now that were not there years ago.
Hilton Head is beautiful and upscale. You really cannot compare MB to Hilton Head because they are two totally different places. For golf, I would say MB has a lot more to offer in terms of number of courses, etc. My Dad plays at Long Bay which is very very nice.
If you are looking for a more relaxed, less touristy setting choose HH. It is kind of the Hamptons of the South. If you feel out of place with those in the "upper crust" or the ultra wealthy it is not the place to go.
Not all of MB is tacky and horrible.

Did you realize when you went to MB that it was WINTER? Rates in any resort area are cheaper in off season which would be the primary reason that restaurants and shops were closed.
I think the the comments that I've heard here about Myrtle Beach are unbelieveably rude.
GoTravel has given an excellent description of Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach and I find it hard to believe that anyone who has actually been in both towns would term Myrtle beach "sleazy", dirty and nasty.
I hope we can go back to leaving these two nice beach town alone and given Hilton Head the clientele they endeavor to and Myrtle Beach the clientele they promote also.
