velodurt,

No, I didn't get an e-mail from you. Just now checked my "In Box" since I haven't deleted everything in awhile, nor have I purged my "Deleted File"
(where new messages sometimes mysteriously appear before I ever have a chance to see them in the "In box"). Nothing from you.

Did you go directly from here at Fodor's? I've found sometimes that works for me and sometimes it doesn't.

velodurt,

Nope, no e-mail. To see if it was some kind of glitch between Fodor's and my e-mail I logged on with my husband's computer and sent myself an e-mail from my address in this thread. Came through okay. Why yours don't, I have no clue. I even checked my spam folder to see if for some bizarre reason it had ended up there. No. Ah, the ever-fascinating, sometimes-mysterious world of computers and the internet.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions. At least I know we can commucate this way.

From looking at your Antelope Canyon photos am I correct in assuming you went on the 11:30 tour, not the 9:30 one? And what time of year was it?

You mentioned in one trip report that you have a hydration system. Which kind? We want to get two before we go and I'm picking the brains of everyone has them. (Hydration systems, not brains. )

Also, we had planned to do that hike to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands. I've read what I can but wonder if you remember how long it took from the trailhead and/or Moab to get to the Arch? I need to work it backwards so I'll know how early we need to be up and on the road.

I am so excited about this trip. I can hardly wait for May 10th to get here.

Hi- I can answer that last question of yours. Mesa Arch is located in Canyonlands National Park. I would say the trailhead is 30-40 miles from Moab, give or take. Maybe an hour or less it takes to get to the trailhead. It is only an half a mile loop and it is easy, and it is only going to take an half hour at the most. It took me less than 15 minutes and that included time to stop and take a picture. It is pretty. But, I am a fast hiker. Take some time to enjoy some of the other overlooks. I think mesa arch is the best as far as short hikes. Upheval Dome Overlook trail to the first overlook is very short, that is something cool to check out. Also, check out Grand View Point and Green River Overlook.

velodurt- What are your most favorite hikes in the eastern united states? Do you think the smokies has some of the best waterfall hikes in the eastern united states? Of course, there is nothing like niagra, but that is more the mid-west and that isn't hiking.

Hey FF, looks like asdaven answered your Mesa Arch question...and I agree.

I use a camelbak hydration system...they are the best IMO.

We actually did the earlier Antelope Canyon tour but stayed until they picked up the second tour...you will love it! We were there at the end of April.

I have emailed..once again...this time from a different account, so hopefully it comes through....but the main point of the email was to tell you that I will be returning to Arizona/Utah this May too!! When will you be hiking The Wave?

Hey asdaven, I don't know what more I can tell you about hiking out east...you will just have to experience it for yourself.

velodurt,

I'll check my e-mail later and see if we had success.

We hike The Wave on the 18th. We'll be staying at a B&B outside Page the nights of the 16, 17, & 18. We'll be in Torrey for Capitol Reef the 20 & 21.

When are you going? Would be great to hook up somewhere along the way even if just to say "hi."

asdaven,

Sorry I didn't say "thanks" for the Mesa Arch info. I appreciate it, and it's just what I needed to know. So belatedly - Thanks. My only excuse is it was late and DH and I were shutting things down but I had to check Fodor's just "one more time" before heading to bed.

velodurt,

I guess the "computer genies" (or whoever/whatever it is) have decided we can't e-mail each other directly. Still nothing has come through.

Where all are you going in May?

FF, I don't get it! Perhaps you have a block on my email address...is this your correct [email protected] Something is not right...I have sent from two different accounts, so it must be on your end...and I never get a returned message either...weird! Well, we are going to all our favorites...Grand canyon, Wave,Antelope,Bryce,Zion,Arches,Capitolreef...and anything else we can fit in...maybe even Havasu...I can't wait!! It would be cool to meet somewhere, but it seems as though you are there later. If I could email than I would give you our dates. How long are you out there?

Hey asdaven, one other cool waterfall in the Smokies that I forgot to mention is Laurel Falls. You might also check out Falls Creek Falls in Tenn., or Cumberland Falls in Kentucky--those are the only ones I am really familiar with...

velodurt,

Flying into SLC about 4:00 pm 5/10.
Overnight wherever we decide to stop between there and Moab.

5/11,12,13 in Moab. Leaving morning of
5/14 to drive down to Monument Valley.

5/15 up to see sunrise then on to Grand Canyon. We'll spend only the one night there since we don't plan to hike more than a very short way into the Canyon on this trip. Tom has never been to the GC so this is more of a trip just to do the rim stuff.

5/16 up for sunrise then to Page. Hope to be able to get in an afternoon river float trip. We're staying at a B&B I found about 13 miles outside Page heading toward Kanab. Has a great view toward the lake, very little light pollution so we can enjoy the stars while we soak away the day's aches and pains. We don't usually go in for such things but since this is a bit more than half way thought the trip, I thought it might be nice. We're there 5/16, 17, 18. Antelope 17, Wave 18.

Up early 5/19 to drive to Bryce. Have a cabin in the park there. May hike Fairyland Loop.

5/20 after sunrise at Bryce we're driving to Capitol Reef. If we get away early enough we'll stop on the way and hike Lower Calf Creek Falls. If not we'll do it the next day. 5/20,21 in Torrey.

5/22 at some point we'll head back to SLC to overnight for a morning flight home on 5/23.

I still don't understand the e-mail thing. Try Tom's - [email protected]

In the meantime, he's going to go into mine and check my settings while I get a bit of actual work done to help pay for all this running around we have coming up.

FF

Thanks velodurt.
FloridaFan- About the hydration system, if you are willing to spend the money, Camelbaks are the way to go. They are the best. But, if you want something cheaper, I would reccomend high sierra. I have one and I like it a lot, except if leaks just a little bit, just drips. But, they are nice and are much cheaper. Also, for hiking out in the desert, I would not reccomend anything less than 2 liters. Mine is a 2 liter and it provides enough water. But, I have not done hikes over 6 miles roundtrip out there and that is usally the max for a dayhike for me. I usally stick to shorter steeper trails rather than longer flatter trails. Velodurt- Have you done the charles bunion hike?Have you been to Mingo Falls? It is on the cherokee side of GSMNP and is on the indian reservation. It is suppose to be the prettist in the area. It is pretty tall too at 100 feet.

asdaven,

Thanks for the info on the hydration systems. I've heard nothing but good things about the Camelbacks. Since we plan to keep on hiking for years, God willing, we'll probably spring for them.

velodurt,

I sent you an e-mail from the NBH website. Didn't know how else to do it.

Hey asdaven, nope, I haven't done the Charles Bunion yet...we did go up the Boulevard Trail to Mt Leconte, and had planned to do it then, but ran out of time. Never been to Mingo Falls either...always a reason to go back! ;-) Hey, another cool waterfall is Blackwater Falls in West Virginia...beautiful!!!

Been to Blackwater Falls. I used to travel to that area all the time. Have you been to Rickets Glen SP in PA?

Or Shenandoah National Park? Have you seen any of the waterfalls in Shenandoah? What is your favorite hike in Shenandoah? I like Old Rag.

Hey, sorry for the delay. I have actually not done much hiking in Shenandoah...just the Whiteoak Canyon back in 1989. I have heard that Old Rag is a great climb...it is on the list! Never been to Rickets Glen either...recommend any trails there?

I have not been to Rickets Glen, but I will tell you what I know about it. I know there is a loop there, I think about 7 miles long and it boasts around 21 waterfalls. I think it is called the falls Trail. You can make a loop of just 3 miles long and see most of the waterfalls, but to get everything out of it, I would say do the full 7 mile loop. It sounds pretty strenous too! But, a lot of people reccomend Rickets Glen. If you go onto the PA DCNR website, search rickets glen and it will tell you about it. Rickets Glen is on my list of places to hike. Another place in Pennsylvania I would like to get to is the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania which is close to the PA/NY boarder and the finger lakes area of NY, which is a river gorge that is supposed to be very scenic. It has trails going down into too. One place that I have been to in PA is Ohiopyle SP, which I would reccomend doing. Good hiking there. It located near Pittsburg. For Shenandoah, I did Old Rag a long time ago, it is a strenous and long hike, but very rewarding!Towards the summit you have to scamble over some rocks. Try the Hawksbill Hike sometime, I think the trail leaves the same parking area that the whiteoak canyon trail does. It is a short hike and gets you up to the highest point in the park. And if you are ever in the Washington DC area, go to Great Falls Park and do the Billy Goat Trail. That is a local favorite of mine. It is located in Maryland and follows a steep rocky gorge of the potomac river. It does have some dropoffs and is rocky. One part is almost a rockclimb. I would suggest going up that part, than down it. You make it a loop of about 5 miles by using the canal towpath. I would start at Great Falls Tavern.
