Grant and Deb,
Frommers Memorable Walks in New York is one of many good books, if you want to walk around the city. It can help with subway stops too. Tour guides exist; some are at www.nycwalk.com and http://www.newyorkcitywalks.com/ to learn more.

Why not walk from lets say west4th & broadway all the way down to the Brooklyn Bridge, cross the bridge & then walk over to the promenade in Brooklyn Heights for a wonderful view of the City! You can stop on Montague Street & pick up a meal to go if its warm out or eat at a reatuarnat there. You can also go to the Marriot Hotel on Court street or the famous Gage & Tollner on Fulton or best but very exp., the River Cafe (reservation way in adv.) ! Taxi or subway back to the City if you are pooped. Thats what I would do!

I love walking in NYC and seldom take any public transportation except to and from the airport. A nice day is to start at our Times Square area hotel and walk all the way down Broadway to 5th Avenue, then continue on 5th to Greenwich Village. Through the village and Soho, stopping as you wish, into the Wall Street Area along the Battery, then to SouthStreet Seaport --maybe for lunch, or better yet if it's too early up to Little Italy or Chinatown for lunch, then back up past Union Square to our hotel. It is all day with stops for browsing, coffee, lunch, an afternoon cocktail, whatever and arriving back in the mid to late afternoon -- then off to the theatre and dinner afterwards. What could be greater than that??
