You're going to the BI correct? Then what about looking for "donkey balls" (a type of chocolate covered macademia nuts)?!?
My son was 10 when we were on the BI... he cracked up and had to have some of these!!
It may not be appropriate for your girls, but it was difficult for us to keep a straight face when our son saw these!

They sell these at Surfin' Ass Coffee in the Kealakekua area (it was also difficult for us to keep a straight face with the name of this store!).

Bill and Belle,
Great ideas! I really didn't want to make it a race. I typed up a table today with 1, 2, and 3 point items on it (30 of each). I included many of the ideas that you guys shared with me. Thanks so much! When we return, I will let you know which ones we couldn't find. I can't wait!!! How many more days, Bill?

Here are a few more:
Mongoose
Hilo Hattie's Store
ABC Store
Banyun Tree
Somebody giving the Shaka sign (make a fist, stick up thumb and little finger, hold your hand in the air and shake back and forth). Means "Hang Loose"...used as a greeting or "Thanks!"
Cairn (those little piles of rocks stacked up on each other). You can't miss them and the "shell graffiti" on you way from the airport to Kona!
Lychee Nut
Pig roasted at a Luau!

I can't wait to see how this turns out. Sorry I threw a wrench in the works with the "race" idea -- shows my competitvie side! haha! Maybe you could let them both work on getting the points/items, and if they find X number of them (toegtehr) they BOTH get a special treat (that you determine). That way they will work together for a common goal. (A much better idea than a competition!) HAVE FUN!

I know! If they work together to get a certain number of points, then mom and dad will give them some extra souvenir money to spend at the Blowhole stands (going there on our last night) and/or Lihue on the way to the airport. They have been saving their money like crazy for the trip so they will be thrilled to have some more! How generous should I be???

Thanks, Dusty, for asking about the Scavenger Hunt! We had a blast. I am not sure if you read my trip report (Big Island and Kauai) but I mentioned the SH in there. Here's what I wrote:
By the way, we had a ton of fun doing the scavenger hunt. These were the items we could NOT find:
Macademia Nut pancakes (we ate mostly in our house/condo)
Woody (real one, not a model)
Wedding dress
Wedding ceremony
Rings of Saturn
Jupiter (didn’t end up going to the top of Mauna Kea)
PoPo's cookies
Fruit stand on the honor system
Monk seal
Yellow Escape (Ford: This was our car in Kauai on our last trip)
Orange beach towel
Gecko tail
Fire knife dancer
Jelly fish
Purple convertible
Loco mocco (no one would order it!)
We DID find 70 items and we gave the girls souvenir money on the last two days, one dollar per point (one, two and three point items based on difficulty level). My older daughter spent all of her money at the Blowhole souvinir stands on gifts for us! How sweet is that???

I really like the system you and bamakelly came up with!
You must be doing something right to have such a sweet daughter! Congrats on that!
Glad you had fun! We've seen weddings every island (HI or Carribean we've stayed on! And honor fruit stands abound on Maui, FYI).
