HELP: stargazing on haleakala?
I've haven't read anyone talking about stargazing in Maui (summit of Halekala)-only on the BI. Has anyone done this? Going to Maui in two weeks and I'd love to do it if it's worth it. Which company?

The problem with Haleakala (and the reason so few guided stargazing tours are offered to it) is that it's 3600' shorter than Mauna Kea. While the summit of Mauna Kea and its visitor center, where stargazing tours set up their telescopes are usually above the low-cloud layer, the summit of Haleakala is often right in the middle of it.
We do the stargazing tour to Mauna Kea every time we go to Hawaii, regardless of which island we're on. Especially if you go during a new moon (or close to a new moon), the views of the Milky Way are absolutely incredible. You're above 40% of the Earth's atmosphere (and 90% of the water vapor) so the stars don't twinkle -- it's a very startling sight the first time you see it.

STARGAZING: At the Hyatt Regency Maui in Kaanapali. Called a Tour of the Stars: if the weather is clear, every night at 8pm, 9pm or 10pm for 1 hour, go up to the roof and look through 2 large telescopes at the wonders of the universe. I saw Jupiter and Saturn with its rings! Amazing. For hotel guests: $20 per adult, for non-guests: $25 per adult. Half price for children. On Friday and Saturday nights there?s an 11pm showing for couples only, includes chocolate dipped strawberries and a glass of champagne. Hotel guests: $25pp, non-guests: $30pp.
