I am in the first stages of planning my next "adventure" to the U.S.
I will be in the Southwest for 3 weeks and want to feature....
Las Vegas
Zion
Bryce
Lake Powell
Monument Valley
Mesa Verde
Canyon de Chelly
Grand Canyon - North and South
My initial difficulty is trying to locate one map that features all of the above. There is one on the Grand Circle website but there is not enough road detail on it. Can anyone offer any recommendations? Thanks a lot.

Been to some of those place just last February-March (except north rim and Mesa Verde earlier on). So why do you need one map covering all? That seems unnecessary.

Without trying to sound too obvious - so I can plan my route and see town names to search for accomodation. I have a book with US state maps in but my route covers several states and it gets very fiddly jumping from page to page. In essence, I like to keep life as simple as possible!

OK, obvious indeed...but why does jumping from page to page get you so "fiddly?" BTW, that's a new word to me. My suggestion: get AAA or other roadmaps, refold them according to area covered, and there you are. Mostly you are only talking about Arizona, Utah and a bit of Colorado. Oh well, maybe you are crossing Kansas, too.

dudraig, the map I use is called "Indian Country Guide Map" covering all the places you are visiting. Las Vegas is a little off the map, but I'm sure you'll find it.

It is a wonderful map with all kinds of information and detail. Shows every road down to the dirt ruts. It is published by the Automobile Club of Southern California, aaa.com, or you can pick it up in any bookstore on your route. $4.95. Also try sidecanyon.com

I also never go without the small, packable guidebook "Southwest USA, the Rough Guide" by Greg Ward. It has detailed maps of the areas with much in-depth information and history.

Both of these are invaluable to any traveler in that magnificent country. You won'd go home and find out you missed something.

P.S. Dudraig. I know what you mean when you say fiddly. I go nuts (or fiddly) when the stuff piles up on the front seat and I can't find anything, including my dog. This way, I only need one map and one guidebook.

seniormsuedu - many thanks for your invaluable advice. I get lots of enjoyment from my vacation planning. We love to spread out a big map on the kitchen table and pour over it for hours, deciding on routes and destinations. We are from South Wales in the U.K. and our next trip will be our 12th visit to the U.S. We love it! So much beauty and so many contrasts...

I am sure a good bookstore might have some maps in stock.

What you need is map nr 6 from Hallwag international 1:1200000.This is a Swiss adaptation of a rand mcnally map but much better and easier to handle and better illustrated. You'll find the map at your local bookstore.Greetings from Belgium.Paul

I think it has most of what you want (part of it is AZ) I know what you mean about having one large map to spread out on the kitchen table. When I am planning, I go one step further; I tape the map to a large foam board and stick those little round push pins in the locations I want to visit. (No I don't take the whole board with me on the trip.It's just for planning!) I hope to do a southwest trip in '07, so I hope you will post a trip report!
