Help! New York city, 5 days!

Me and my daughter(teenage) are off to NYC for 5 days soon. There is sooo much to do there, so to narrow it down i need your advice....Any sites that are overated or overpriced? Any sites that are an abosolute must? What would be a reasonable itinarary for 5 days?
I know i'm asking alot, but any advice would be appreciated. As you can probably tell, we're a bit unprepared, so anybody who has been there before, your input would be very useful....
Thank You in Advance
Erica.

It would be a lot easier to help you and the advice would be a lot better if you would let us know what you likes and dislikes are, what types of activities you want, etc. Theater? Museums? Shopping? Etc.? Etc.? Etc.?

Hi Erica - we took our 15 year old goddaughter to NYC in January and I posted a trip report - I've brought it to the top for you, however some of the things might not be as relevant now (i.e. the shows we saw, etc).

But here are some ideas:

1) We did a bit of advance planning with our goddaughter regarding MOMA, the Met, Museum of Natural History, etc. We knew we wouldn't have long so we researched the permanent collections and current shows to be sure we saw things that interested her. That avoided us just wandering around trying to appear interested. We did our research in a couple of hours together going through the museums' web sites.

2) We went to the Rosie O'Donnell show. Although we were fortunate enough to have advance tickets - all of the "standbys" got in - so it might be worth a shot (if it doesn't work you'll know by about 9:15am so you haven't wasted the day). Also while we were waiting in line they were looking for people for Regis/Kathy Live etc - so you might just luck out. Even if your daughter isn't a big fan of either - it's fun to be part of a live broadcast and our goddaughter had evidence of her trip via the taped broadcast!

3) The time of year didn't permit us to take the circle tour of the island of Manhattan (too cold) but if you're going this Fall it's a great way to see a lot of sites. It's about 3 hours and well worth it -- but it that's too long there's a truncated version that does mostly the south end of the island (Statue of Liberty, etc).

4) Our goddaughter loved walking around SOHO and Greenwich Village - we spent a half a day there but it could have been longer.

5) Food/Restaurants were a large part of our visit. I would suggest a search of this site for restaurant suggestions for teenagers - there have been quite a few postings.

Hope this helps - please e-mail me directly if you have questions - and enjoy your visit.
