HELP!-need cheap accomodations in NYC

Hi, my friend and I are coming to NYC for 4 days and 3 nights. Money is tight between both of us and we would like to know if anyone out there knows of any hotels in safe parts of NYC that we could stay at for those 3 nights. If possible, the accomodations could be close to times square and rockefeller center, but it has to be safe and nice. Please get back to us!!! Thanks so much

I stayed at the President or Presidential Hotel about a yr. and a half ago and would highly recommend it. It's owned and/or operated Best Western and has a great (& safe) location (approx. 48th & Broadway). I paid around $90 a night.

Don't know if you're talking this cheap, but many years ago I spent a week at the YWCA while my apartment was being painted. It was in the East 30s in a safe area and back in 1975 an unbelievable $7 a night. I got a teensy-tiny room with a bed and a dresser. Bathroom down the hall. Everything very clean. When in NYC for 3-4 days you're certainly not going to spend a lot of time in your room, so if this is not too downscale for you, it's worth a call to see if it's still there. Of course it's only for women, but if your friend is male, it's always fun to stay at the -- oh, never mind.

Hotels are really not cheap in the city, but I would suggest trying the Best Western and Howard Johnson chains for rates in the city.

Also check with a local travel agent in your area for any package deals. You might even get better airfare and hotel.

Don't bother renting a car while you are here, just gets in the way and is expensive to rent and park.

Other than that have a great time in the city. If you have any other specific questions, I live in the city and would be happy to help.

NYC hotels are expensive to begin with and certain seasons including summer bring the highest rates. Try for a place that offers some rooms with a shared bath. The Pickwick Arms does and is closest to your desired location. The Murray Hill Inn also fits the bill but is not as close to Times Square (but not far by public transport). Figure on spending $75-85 per night BEFORE taxes (which are in the vicinity of 10-13%).

I recently read a good review of what I think was called the Habitat Hotel(?) located in midtown -- sounded like a step up from a hostel -- some rooms w/ shared bath & some private. Maybe do a search (might be on Frommer's website -- can't remember). Good luck.

Eileen,

Try the Vanderbilt YMCA hostel. It is in a very safe neighborhood near the United Nations. It is usually frequented by Europeans coming to NYC. It's not luxurious, but it's probably the best bet for your money and safety. I believe that guests at the hostel are allowed to use the gym facilities for free. I swim at the gym 4 times a week. I believe that you can read more about the location on the Internet. Make reservations in advance. They are always crowded.
Good Luck.

I just booked a room at the Gershwin Hotel, which sounds like a pretty cool place. (lower midtown) Recommended by Frommers. $98.99 through hoteldiscounts.com. They also have shared bathroom rooms or dorm style rooms which should be cheaper.
