chs29445,
round trip was probably 5 miles or so.
We were there in October and yes, it would be cold without proper gear. We rented pants and shoes. The pants are more than a wet suit, they keep you dry(a dry suit). The shoes do get wet. I think you would want to rent the shoes even in the summer time. They are much better than a water shoe. They also come with a special sock. We rented them from Zion Adventure Company. You can get full dry suit to cover you entire body. They have two locations in Springdale.
About half of the hike is in the water. It never was above our waist, but it could be if the river was up a little. I understand that sometimes a short swim may even be needed at a few spots along the way.
We saw many people(about half of the hikers) going a long way in without any gear at all. I saw small chidrens feet very red. That bothered me a lot. Had it been in the summer I wouldn't have though anything about it. Had it been just for 30 minutes or so, then no big deal. But to be in cold water for 4-5 hours is crazy not to be properly outfitted.
I don't normally hike with a stick or pole, but for this hike I would suggest one. You should take a dry bag for you camera. Zion Adventure Co. rents those for like $4 or $5.
