Help me plan January on Broadway
After getting good news from my cancer doctor, we are finally free to plan our NY get-away. Currently set for weekend of January 7-11. What shows to see?? We are BIG fans of musicals. So my current list includes:
- King and I
-Fiddler
-Something Rotten
Then what to add ?????
-School of Rock
-Dames at Sea
-Tuck Everlasting
Can't get tickets for Hamilton. Oh well.
Have already seen:
-Chicago
-Book.....
-Curious....
-Gentlesman's Guide.....
-Kinky Boots
-Lion King
-Matilda
-Wicked
We have time for five shows. Help!

King and I is great, as is Something Rotten. I'm not a Fiddler fan, but if you are Danny Burstein is wonderful in general, so he should be wonderful in this.
School of Rock got pretty good reviews, so if the movie or Andrew Lloyd Weber interests you, it might be a good choice. Dames at Sea did not and is closing soon, so it might be gone. I have no idea about Tuck Everlasting.
Now what else? If you only have an interest in musicals.
On Your Feet - if you are a Gloria Estefan fan
The Color Purple - great reviews this morning
Allegiance - I loved it, but it's not a musical you'll leave humming the songs.
An American in Paris - if you love dancing
Fun Home - different and wonderful
Beautiful - great songs and performances
In Plays:
Noises Off - I'm seeing it but not until February
King Charles III - Trying to figure out when I can see this (goes through January only)

Thanks, Doug. Both Noises (loved it at the Stratford Festival a few years back) and King Charles are on my radar. Not sure if KC will play as well here as it did in London.
I'm not a Gloria Estefan fan and haven't been too impressed with the bits and bobs I've seen on TV.
I saw the Color Purple the last time around, but I did read the reviews today and sounds like it could be worth a repeat.
Fun Home....not for me.
Beautiful -- although I love Carole King (Tapestry has been one of my favorite albums for a lifetime), this show just hasn't grabbed me. I'll keep it in the running though.
I kinda liked School or Rock movie, but am not an ALW fan...so that one may deserve a second thought.
I think I was mistaken and Tuck won't be open when we are there in January.
Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks all. I have booked most of our shows now. Coming in on a Thursday and out on Monday, I've managed to fit in 5 shows for the weekend.
Noises Off
King and I
Fiddler...
Color Purple
Something Rotten...
We could do one more show on Saturday afternoon but DH is hitting overload. Maybe a museum or two would be a good change of pace.

Hi Elizabeth. Yes...Cozumel in February. I'm taking a break from my cancer treatments to gain some strength and have some fun! Are you returning to the island?
So Patrick, I'm not sure if you will agree......but how about King Charles?
Is it as relavent to Americans as to Brits? That was my concern. We could slot it in on Saturday afternoon for a full six shows in four days! Typical NY trip for us.
Thanks all.

Right now, King Charles III is consistently available at the Time Square TKTS booth for a discount (usually 30%). It's going to be much quieter in January than it is now, so I don't expect that to change. I'd wait and see what you might want to do. You can always pick up the tickets the same day (or the day before for a matinee if you go to the South Street Seaport booth or Brooklyn).

I've seen Richard III a number of times, Patrick. I've been through all of Shakespeare's works many times over having been a long time supporter of The Guthrie Theater during Garland Wright's tenure. That just isn't what we go to NY to see. We have superior classical theater at home. That's probably why KC hasn't grabbed me. Thanks for your help.

Yes, I have to admit, if you're looking for an evening of light and fun musicals ( and in my book there's nothing wrong with that) then King Charles isn't going to do it for you. I was merely suggesting what I feel is perhaps the strongest piece of fine theatre currently on Broadway. If you want to avoid wonderful classic theatre for this trip, then yes, avoid it.

Re School of Rock-I suspected that even tho it's fun I was afraid of the loudness. Sure enough it was mentioned several times in the New York Times review.
You might want to SKIP China Doll, the new Al Pacino oeuvre. How about Jersey Boys.

Zinggy, Thanks for asking. Hubby is cancer free now. Good thing. He's had his hands full with me the last two years.
Patrick, Thanks for your help. We do go to NY for all that singing and dancing. It's what we don't have at home. Right now, I'm up for a lot of FUN! Got enough serious in my personal life.
330east, I thought School would be very loud. Even the trailers are loud! I think we're set with our current 5 shows. It seems like a good sampling for one weekend.
Thanks everyone.
