Help!! Looking for New England getaway to spend our anniversary!!

My husband and I will be in Newport RI and Cape Cod for a conference the 2nd week of Nov. Although we realize that this is not the optimal time of year, we plan to remain in New England after the conference and celebrate our wedding anniversary. We have never been to New England before and we are looking for a romantic getaway, preferable a B&B within several hours of Boston in any direction. We are looking for peaceful, quiet and most of all romantic!! We would also like to see some of the covered bridges and quaint towns that New England is noted for. Any suggestions???

In Woodstock, Vermont you will find a lovely place, the Woodstock Inn. You might need to check out the bridges.

You could try to book the jacuzzi suite at the Harborlight Inn in Marblehead. Marblehead is a lovely, seaside fishing town, only an hour from Boston, with some very nice restaurants. And the suite I mention because it has a fireplace, and a giant bathroom with a 2 person jacuzzi. My husband and I spent a very romantic, rainy March weekend there once.

I suggest you invest a few dollars in the guidebook: Reommended Country Inns of New England by Elizabeth Squier. There are just so many wonderful palces to stay in New Englad, you have to select the one you think would be perfect for this special occasion. Two that I would recommend are: The Manor at Golden Pond in Holderness, NH; and Captain Lord Mansion in Kennebunkport, ME, which gets 4 stars in the Mobil Guide.

Melissa--my husband and I spent a weekend at the Bethel Inn in Bethel, Maine. Several covered bridges close by. The restaurant at the Inn was wonderful--it seems like every restaurant we went to in Maine had terrific chefs that had left the fast lane for the quiet life of Maine and we have never had better food (even in Paris!) Sometimes I wonder if it was just the cool weather and quiet pace that made everything taste so good. We also enjoyed the Pomegranate Inn in Portland, Maine.

If you are looking for a traditional antique, Maine oceanfront B&B, I recommend the York Harbor Inn in York Harbor, Maine. The food is superb, the rooms are packed with charm and the pub downstairs feels better than my living room. Within a 20 minute drive from the Inn is Kittery Outlet shopping, Nubble Lighthouse and tons of antique stores. Walks on the ocean and some fresh lobster will make it memorable. My wife and I got married there. Enjoy!

I recommend the Lawnmeer Inn, Boothbay Harbor, Maine. www.lawnmeerinn.com

They have a lovely setting with a dining room on the water -- very quiet and secluded.

I adore the Bradley Inn at Pemaquid Point. Charming Inn, great restaurant, moon through the pines, walk to Pemaquid Lighthouse perched on gorgeous rocks that are mimicking waves. You can't do better -- it's definitely a "hideaway," about 3 hrs. from Boston, at most.
