Help - Las Vegas Rio?

Have to book hotel later today. Considering Rio Suites for more space and refrigerator. Pool sounds good. Two teenage boys with us. Can get $69 rate. Seafood buffet sounds good. Any advice on booking this hotel would be appreciated. Thanks.

Leta - haven't stayed at the Rio, but friends love it. we prefer to stay more centrally located on the strip (Bellagio, Aladdin, Paris). Although Rio is not on the strip, I think they have a shuttle that will drop you off there to wander (also would be a cheap cab ride so not a big deal).

Only thing I would consider is if you can get a good rate at Mandalay Bay. It's not centrally located (out by Luxor) but the pool area would be great for teenage boys - wave pool, etc.).

For an extra $30 you could stay at the Venetian.
Rio is fine, but away from the strip so getting to/from the hotel is a hassle.
Its casino is one of the better ones.
Rooms are in need of some sprucing up IMO. They're decent size, but nothing like Venetian.
If you're willing to stay of the strip and need space and 'frig, why not stay at the Residence Inn or Embassy Sites by the Hard Rock? Rates may not be as good, but space options are better.
The 'suites' at Rio aren't 2 separate rooms. Just a large bedroom with sitting area.

Thanks for the quick answers! To answer some questions. We've stayed at Bellagios and know the better side. We are trying to make a cheap trip with both boys; we are there for the Nike Basketball Tournament. We will have a car, and will be using it daily to drive to gyms. Mandalay Bay was first choice but rates were twice as much. Rio says has a beach pool. Anyone seen it? I know Venetian suites are nice, but they didn't have a great pool area. Same with Embassy Suites. Have considered Hard Rock. Any suggestions about that? Priorities for this trip are cheap, great pool area, large room, frig., and fun. Good buffets would be nice. Really appreciate your help!

Monte Carlo has one of the better pool areas in Vegas and is often pretty cheap, especially during the summer. Might want to check them out. Location is much better than Rio, anyway.

The buffet there is fair but not great. Mandalay Bay's is much better, and pretty convenient to MC (walk next door to NYNY, cross street to Excalibur, monorail to Mandalay Bay).

Haven't been to Rio's seafood buffet, but the regular buffet is very good, or at least was the last time I went there a couple of years ago. Rio is nice, but I find that waiting for the shuttle from the Strip is too much of a hassle. I'd rather be at a hotel where I can walk to other things.

How far is Rio from the Strip? How about Hard Rock....any pros or cons about that one? Thanks again. Trying to make a decision today.

Hi Leta,
We have stayed at the Rio about 4 times, and never had a bad time. The worst thing (if this can be considered worse) is that you have to take a shuttle to the strip. But the shuttle is free and easy to take.We always cabbed it, not expensive.
The pools are great, one has a sand beach, there are always young people around. There are many good restaurants in the hotel. The Seafood place called Buzios was our favorite. The Mexican place is also good,Bambaleo.
They have a show called Masquerade in the Sky-you and the boys will love it.
The rooms are very nice, and when making your reservation, ask for a high floor in the tower-you might get a mountain view, but that is ok if it is on a high floor. We had that the first time, after that always asked for a high floor overlooking the Strip-which is only a good view at night
They have a safe, dressing area, fridge, iron, sink in and out of the bath, the tv is large, they have a large sofa, and the beds are huge
So I think it sounds good to me, will you be taking two rooms ? And tell them nothing by the elevator!

Rio's pool area is popular with the party crowd, but nothing very special. It does have a beach volleyball court.

The buffets are decent - lots of food, but the cost of 4 buffet meals will add up and you won't have much else to choose from in the immediate vicinity.

Depending on where the tournament is, the one advantage is that you won't have to negotiate your drive up and down the Strip.

I am a freaquent visitor to Vegas. Rios pool is OK. Much bigger pool areas then Monte Carlos but not as big as MB's. If you have a car I think it would be a good choice. In fact that is where I am treating my friend and her teenage girls in Sept for the GOO Goo dolls concert.

Hard Rock's pool is a complete party/meet market scene... so if that is what you want for your boys then go for it.

mimi,

What is a "meet market"? Is it anything like a swap meet or a flea market?

Huh?

Thanks soooo much for the info. Glad to hear about the beach volleyball - my boys love that. And I do want a hotel where other young people will be. The gyms are in area high schools. Don't have a clue. I'm sure we won't be eating all our meals just at this hotel, as they will want to walk the strip. CAN you walk from Rio to the Strip? Also does anyone know if Rio has a parking garage? I'm still leaning toward the Rio, unless I hear the Monte Carlo or Hard Rock is better. I know Mandalay Bay would be great but not willing to pay twice the amount this trip. The kids are just thrilled to be going, they don't have to have first class - if the rooms are clean and large, that is great. Frig is definitely a plus for snacks. Still have several hours before decision. Any more imput is greatly appreciated. We're from Tulsa. Leta

They do have a parking garage.
You cannot walk to the strip, there is an overpass over the highway and as of the last time I was in LV, March, there didn't seem to be a walkway for pedestrians.Although I was at the Bellagio and could have missed it.
You can call and ask, ask for Casino Services to book your room, they are nice and will answer any and all questions.
As for First Class, the hotel is clean ,the rooms are very big with wall to wall floor to ceiling windows, it feels pretty First Class so the boys will most likely get a kick out of it

You can't walk to the Strip from the Rio, but there is a shuttle - you just have to have patience at times. Once you're on the Strip, you can take the tram.

The pool at the Hard Rock is good. More like a lagoon with music pumped in under water which is cool. The hotel is off the Strip though and not within walking distance. The casino is nice, but smaller and is geared for the 20 something crowd. Good 24 hour coffee shop.

Haven't stayed at the Monte Carlo, but not a bad Strip location and I've heard alot of positive stuff from people who love it for the money.

Ya'll are just too nice to keep answering all my questions. I didn't realize we couldn't walk from the Rio. Guess I didn't realize it was so far from the Strip. Has anyone used this shuttle, and does it run pretty frequently and late, and is it really a pain to use??? I can get the same rates at the Monte Carlo...would that be a better choice taking into account my previous listed priorities? I guess good pool area is a big one and I can't afford Mandalay Bay. Next best choice?

Any comments about MGM Grand? I've read they have a good pool area. Do they have beach volleyball?

Hi Leta.

We're going this week and we're staying at the Mirage. I don't know when your'e going, but in Sept and Aug they have pretty decent rates at Mirage.
The pool area is beautiful. I don't know how geared for kids it is, but you also might want to consider Treasure Island, which is also a Mirage/MGM property. It's a fantastic area. The rooms at T.I. have been running around the same price as the Rio's, and the Mirage rooms a little more. We're paying $79 a night at Mirage, and more on weekend ($129) At T.I. I've noticed rates as low as $65 a night/more on weekend. Howeever, I think T.I. charges extra per child, so maybe that's not such a deal after all.
You've probably been on the different
web sites, but you can view the pool at treasure island on their site.
MGM is absolutely too big. It's a huge effort just to walk from your room to the outside of the place. However, I would think it would appeal greatly to teenagers. The room rates there have been around $85 a night. Call the hotels directly, as it beat any internet
rates that I was able to find. That's been my experience generally.

MGM has Lion Habitat, Rain Forest Cafe (it actually "rains" inside the restaurant!) And also, it's across the street from New York New York, which has a rollercoaster!
If you have anymore questions, please feel free to e-mail me directly. I am
not a travel agent FYI -- just love Las Vegas (and Hawaii)

Leta, while you do have to take a cab or the shuttle to the strip..it is just across the overpass.A two minute drive.
So you are not far, just that there is no pedestrian walk way.
We used the shuttle a lot the first time we were there, March a few years ago,it was chilly and windy and we waited inside, the shuttle pulled up and we got in!
If the boys are too young to be in a casino alone, then being on the Strip will not matter to them,as they can not go to the other hotels/casinos without you.

Leta, we were just in LV and stayed at the Rio. To our surprise, we really enjoyed it. It was our first time staying off the strip but the shuttle was very convenient. It leaves the Rio every 15 minutes and drops you off at Harrahs. I believe the last shuttle from Harrahs back to the Rio leaves at 1am. There are 4 pools, the pool that has the sand near it was full of small children when I was there. All in all we would stay there again.

the rio hotel is a great hotel. if you can get a room upgrade to a full suite instead of a mini suit take it, you will be happy you did. the suites are very nice and very big. i haven't had the seafood buffet, but the regular buffet they have there is always voted one of the top 5 in the city. and yes there is a shuttle that goes to harrahs, which is on the strip right next to the venetian and across the street from the mirage. walking distance to the pirate show at treasure island as well. as for the shuttle stopping at 1am, i think it actually keeps going even later, just longer waits between shuttles. there is no reason to spend more for a worse room on the strip when you can get there very easy with a shuttle and since you have kids you won't be staying at one hotel for too long anyway.
