help in vacation planning.
Hi.
We have three free tickets to anywhere in US (excluding Hawaii), or to Canada. I am trying to plan a family vacation for 5 -6 days. We have 3 year old toddler.
It seems like San Diego has many things to do. I visited the
www.sandiego.org but the information I found is overwhelming. I am not sure what to look or where to begin. We would like to be near a beach in a kid friendly hotel maybe with some kid activities or at least a kid pool. (Nothing so fancy, clean, and not so noisy.)
Any suggestions? Also we are flying out from CMH. If you think out some other interesting destinations please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

We need so much more information to help you.
We need to know your
Budget for the trip?
What do you like to do?
What time of the year are you going?
Do you like relaxing or sightseeing?
What type of sightseeing do you like to do?
Do you like indoor or outdoor activities?
Do you want a lot of scenery or would you rather have activities to do?
Do you prefer cities or resorts?
What is your dream vacation? Is there someplace in the US that you have always wanted to see?
Thanks.

When I lived in Seattle, I would often take a quick trip with my 3 year old to San Diego. Spending a day at the beach building sand castles, a day at the San Diego Zoo petting and learning about the animals, going to Sea World and dining next to Shamu for lunch (reservations required). We've gone to Balboa Park and flew kites and had a picnic. You can even take a drive and see the Wild Animal Park. There are boardwalks to explore and people watch. San Diego is wonderful for toddlers. I don't know your budgeting for hotels or how close to the beach you wish to be, but there are quite a few that have family suites, kitchenettes and close to the beach.

Hi kkj
We usually take trips to Europe, but with a toddler and with those free tickets we were thinking go somewhere near beach or on the beach. Last year we were in clearwater, fl. and it was a nice vacation.
Here are the answers to your questions.
Budget for the trip? Since the plane tickets will be free I think we will be spending $1200 up to $1600 for 6 days
What do you like to do? We like to see new places.
What time of the year are you going? Aiming for end of July, beginning of August but we can change the dates.
Do you like relaxing or sightseeing? Both, it is kind of hard to relax while we are running after a 3 year old??.
What type of sightseeing do you like to do? We love to go museums. My husband loves bookstores.
Do you like indoor or outdoor activities?
Do you want a lot of scenery or would you rather have activities to do? Scenery.
Do you prefer cities or resorts? Mostly cities but maybe it is easier to go to a resort with a toddler.
What is your dream vacation? Is there someplace in the US that you have always wanted to see? I saw very few places in US any place will a treat for me.
Thank you so much for your help.

San Diego sounds perfect for you. I assume yoiu've already checked out Fodors miniuguide to Sa n Diego: http://www.fodors.com/miniguides/mgr...=san_diego@136
You probably want to stay in Mission Beach or Pacific Beach. Don't miss Sea World or the Zoo. You'll definately need a car in San Diego.

pongised: I live near San Diego and visit there all the time. If you like museums, be sure to visit Balboa Park - there are many great museums there where you can see dinosaur bones or classic cars or model trains etc.
I suggest you stay near Sea World on Mission Bay. Sea World is a must. It's great for toddlers and parents as well. So fun! There is also a boardwalk/amusement park and skate rink nearby. You can rent bikes or skates or take walks around Mission Bay - there is a very nice path that goes around it. There is also a wonderful park/playground on the waterfront.
Visit nearby Old Town for a real Mexican lunch and see the first old buildings in California.
Skip the Wild Animal Park. The long drive will surely get to the toddler and it's too hot in the summer. Besides, most of the animals hide out in the shade so you won't see much of them anyway.
The beach at La Jolla is great for a day trip and there are elegant restaurants and shops overlooking the ocean. It's about a10 minute drive from Mission Bay.
Be sure to rent a car - convertible, of course!
