Help! Hawaii Experts - Surfboard Trouble

Hi

A friend of mine and his family are going to Hawaii at the end of December. He's concerned about how to get from the airport to his hotel in Waikiki with a couple of Malibu surfboards. Can any one suggest what his transportation options are? Thanks for your help.

You can catch a shuttle by calling (800) 671-2999, 1-888-924 9292, 1-866-836-0317. I hope this helps

Are you renting a car? We brought a surfboard with us when traveling once (although it wasn't Hawaii). We brought rope and bungee cords and tied it to the top of the rental car. We were careful not to do this in front of the rental place (waited curbside for our driver). Also, be very careful not to scrape the roof of the car. No problem.

EXCEPT there were no waves. And we could have easily rented a surfboard for the week - in other words, for the fee the airline will charge, and the hassle, consider renting a board at your destination. In the best surf spots, there are very nice boards available to rent - not just those styrofoam beginner boards.

Hi

Thank you both for the helpful info. Scubadiver, have you got any websites for shuttle services?
Sorry I should have mentioned that he doesn't intend to rent a car from the airport. I did suggest renting a board in Hawaii for the same reasons Joan gave - he may change his mind.

OH, there will be waves, all right. Out on the North Shore this week, we've had the biggest waves all season. 25 feet!!!

I'd go to your surfing magazines to find surfer forums to get the best advice available. There's a great network out there, and checking in local may help your friend with surfing edicate, which is very important in many areas of hawaii. Locals can have rules, but it is usually due to keeping tourists from getting someone hurt in unfamiliar waters.
