HELP! GREAT CAPPUCINO and PASTRY in NYC IN NYC

Like Starbucks, but am looking for a very good local cappucino/expresso bar in NYC preferably in Village, Soho, or therabouts, but am willing to travel far and wide!

Cafe Reggio in the Village. Good espresso, great mocha, lots of old world atmosphere.

Veniero's on E. 11th St. - it's been around since 1894, IMHO best in the city for quality and value!

I love Cafe Reggio - was just there this past Sunday but I'll disagree that it has "great" espresso or cappuccino. Ditto with La Lanterna, on the next block of MacDougal. Reggio is worth a visit for the atmosphere and also because they have on display the very first commercial espresso machine ever brought to the US. It's a La Pavoni dating back to 1927. I'm still looking around for a really good cappuccino but haven't had much luck yet.

My research is targeted at a review/report I'll post in my "hobby" website -

http://espressotravelguide.com

There is no advertising or agenda other than the search for great espresso - if you can suggest places in other locales I'll appreciate it - I'm looking for input.

Here are a few NYC suggestions:

Higher Grounds Cafe
700 East 9th Street #2

The Halcyon in Brooklyn at 227 Smith St. They use Vivace espresso from Seattle.

Chelsea Coffeehouse at 7th Ave and West 21st

Cafe Gitane at 224 Mott Street near Prince

There are some chains besides Starbucks (which is ubiquitous - they have about 50 - 60 locations in Manhattan alone). Timothy's and Oren's are the two biggest 'bucks competitors. I've heard good things about The Grey Dog also but have yet to try it.

Let me know when you're planning to do your trip. I expect to do a full weekend soon devoted to an espresso/cappuccino search in Manhattan. Will post results here and on my website.

I'll leave the discussion of pastries ot others as I'm no gourmand in that category.

I love La Lanterna in the Village. IMHO, far surpasses Reggio. On the Upper West Side (83rd & Amsterdam), Cafe Lalo is immensely popular - pastries are beautiful, but taste, while good, doesn't quite match appearance. (By the way, Timothy's unfortunately has closed.)

Another vote for Veniero's. Also, right around the corner from Purto Rico Coffee.

Owen, looking forward to your goal on locating good cappucino/expresso coffee bars.We used to go to a place which had the most wonderful cappucino called Chelsea on 3rd in the Village, but it folded. That's why we're on the hunt again. Starbucks is good, but we want better and locally owned. Is Starbucks the reason for the demise of local places? Again, have your website and will watch it. My e-mail is [email protected] if you find something? Good luck in your pursuit!

You'll probably get lots of recommendations for places in Little Italy, as there are scads of bakery/coffee shops there. Another place I really like is just above the East Village - Cafe Indulge at 561 2nd Av near 32d. They make great pastry right on premise, and serve a great breakfast, too. Haven't been there for other meals so can't comment.
