We returned, by road, to Key West from our home in Fort Lauderdale last year for a long weekend.

I found the drive down a lot less interesting/scenic than when we first did it decades ago. This is due, in part, to the fact that we live at the beach and we see the sand and ocean out the front windows all day long so I guess we've become a bit jaded. For someone who is not in that situation, it would probably be better.

Key West has, IMO, changed somewhat over the years as many places do. We were at the foot of Duval in an accommodation overlooking the water and a whole bunch of people partying. Two cruise ships were in also.

I agree there are a lot of more quiet parts of town but when you want to get away from those the crowded scene on Duval was a jolt.

And the weekend Duval drag with the pickups and the beer and the loud music has not changed.

Overall I think the place is still charming in many ways but yes it is "what you make it" and should be visited at least once IMO. But I would never drive down again; too much traffic and not relaxing but that's just me.
