I'm looking for a web site or SOMETHING that can give me an idea about campgrounds I am considering reserving for our trip out east this summer. (I've found a couple bulletin boards, but no one ever responds -- they don't seem to be very active boards. There was one site that gives recommendations -- or not-- from people who have stayed at certain campgrounds, but there are only a few campgrounds per state.) It's very confusing going by web sites and the AAA guide, because I HAVE heard a few negative things about a couple campgrounds, and thus, changed our plans....Help!

I don't have much to offer since we are just starting to camp again after 10 years. This past weekend we enjoyed Peters Pond in Sandwich MA on the Cape but it has a lot of seasonal sites and caters to trailers. We toured Nickerson State Park in Brewster where I used to camp as a child. It's still a beautiful place, large sites, great biking trails and freshwater swimming but a lot of the sites did not look like the would accomodate a large trailer (lots of trees) and I don't think hookups were offered. 10 years ago we loved Spring Gulch in PA Amish country and several places we stayed at along the Smokies in VA. After you find the facilities you want, I think the next question to ask is what percentage of the campground is seasonal sites because we found that people had their groups of friends and didn't tend to talk to those of us who were just passing thru. OTH places where most were just passing thru we found people to be more talkative and friendly. The other thing to watch out for is that some of the places have horribly tiny sites for people who are just staying a night or two while the rest of the campground was attractive and full of seasonal campers. There was one place in NY were we were assigned a space that was pretty much a parking lot yet it had received a high rating from the campground guide. Good luck and happy camping.

I KNOW there are thousands of people (even millions, I'm sure) who came across the country each summer, but the sites are few and far between!

Where are all the people that camp in the tourist spots now? The campgrounds are booked in summer, so there must be SOME people SOMEWHERE that stay in them!

Kristen, I think you must be right. There is not a whole lot of on-line info for campgrounds. And it seems like such an obvious and useful sort of thing to have.

Great reference== Camping World Campground Directory published by Woodall's I know they have a web site,just can't remember it ...
It rates campgrounds, lists repair places, ATM sites,driving directions ets. Used it many times with good results.
My favorite directory,however, is KOA..usually free at campgrounds, never found a "bad" one.Must have stayed in 30 sites over the years.(stands for "kampgrounds of America"

Check out www.woodalls.com, this a campground directory that lists and rates private and public campgrounds through out the united states, canada and mexico. I am an advid camper so I purchased their catalog and if you enjoy camping it is definately worth purchasing! Let me know if you have any more specific questions, I have many campgrounds I could suggest if you have an idea of where you want to go.

We have always camped out at state campgrounds. I don't know about for the states in the Eastern part of the U.S. but Texas and Oklahoma State Park programs have their own web pages.

State of Maryland and Virginia have their web sites for campgrounds. Go to Yahoo/outdoor/camping. I personaly like to camp in national parks. You can find information at their web site: www.npca.org. Happy camping!
