Search this forum there are SO MANY of those questions answered.

Also get a book on the city so you can get some ideas of what is here, and distances from where you are staying.

You may want to consider a bus tour. Great overview of the place.

Do NOT reco a bus trip. It isolates you from the city - there's little point in just loking at the outside of buildings and the locals going about their daily lives (going to work, getting a coffee at Starbucks etc).

Buy and read at least 2 good guide books. Then decide what YOU really want to do. And just do it - don;t just sit an listen to someone )often inaccurae) talk about things.

My must dos are:

TheMet
Ellis Island Immigration Museum (with ferry ride past Statue of Liberty)
Top of the Rock
Central Park
a couple of Broadway shows

Spending at least one evening like a local: pick a residential area (upper west side or Village or?) go real (or window shopping - many places are open until 11 or 12) - have dinner at a casuale restaurant and a drink or desert at one or two of the thousand of sidewalk cafes - and people watch.
