To Tracy2cents,
Zion to the N. Rim, to Page (which is then out of the way when taking Alt. Hwy 89) to the S. Rim is 380 miles and about 10 to 11 hours of just driving time...let alone time to see the N. Rim and Lake Powell.
There is no reason to go to both the N. Rim and the S. Rim with such a small amount of time available.
If they drive Hwy 89 though Kanab and by Lake Powell then it's only 255 miles and about 5 1/2 hours of driving.
The difference between Alt 89 and Hwy 89 is Alt. 89 takes you though the mountains. It's beautiful, but slow driving expecially if you get stuck behind a motorhome or two. Hwy 89 takes you though the lower part of the Escalante - Grand Staircase National Monument with scenery that is beautiful desert.
