Hawaiiana or Breakers?

Ok, so after spending a couple days comparing these two via travel guides, their websites, and travel forums like this, they appear to be indistinguishable.

Is that true?

Also, do you get what you pay for? Retro is cool, but dilapidated isn't. Am I better off declaring bankruptcy for the Halekulani?

First of all, there's a lot of range ridin' in there between the Breakers and Hawaiiana, two of the most inexpensive options and the Halekulani, which is probably THE most expensive hotel on Oahu, if not the entire state of Hawaii.

I have seen good reviews about both. I actually emailed a special inquiry to both the Hawaiiana and the Breakers last year. While I received prompt and courteous replies from both, I was especially impressed with the reply from Hawaaiana as being extremely friendly and inviting.

I have not actually been to either but I did take note of the fact that two of the staff members who appear at
www.breakers-hawaii.com/staff.html are holding cats. I like cats but I wouldn't their hair and dander in my room and those who are allergic should take note of this.

We stayed at the Hawaiiana in early December and felt we got very good value. But we felt rooms/suites on lowest level were quite dark. Ask for upper floors, or look at a few rooms when you arrive. Ask about the weekly rate. I'm afraid it might not be available Dec. 20 through April. Having kitchenette facilities really helps with the budget. Barbecues available pool-side too. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Location great. Pretty grounds. Friendly staff and guests.

What are the views from the rooms at the Hawaiiana?

What about the street noise?

I travel to Waikiki 3x a year and have seen those dumps. I would try one of the ohana hotels or maybe a marc hotel. Breakers and Hawaiiana really show their age and frankly don’t look safe. You don’t have to break the bank to stay in Waikiki.
