Hawaiian Shaved Ice - Road Trip to North Carolina
Hey everyone! In about a month, I am going to be driving from Michigan to North Carolina via Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. I have had a hankering for true Hawaiian Shaved ice ever since I honeymooned in Hawaii...sadly there seems to be zero places in Michigan that offer the treat. I am hoping that somewhere on my trip I could encounter one. Does anyone know of a place somewhere down 75 that might sell the good stuff? I have found evidence of a shop in Bowling Green KY, and of a bunch of fairs that have them...but none are near my route or on the same dates I will be on teh road.
Please feed my Hawaiian Shaved Ice addiction! Let me know if you know of a place. Thanks!

I don't know the difference but we do have a Water Ice Factory here in Matthews, (NC). I believe they are out of Philly. You can likely find it on www.charlotte.com.

Hmm...looks kind of close. Hard to tell from pictures if it is just a slushie or if it is true hawaiian shaved ice. It looks more like a slushie, but delicious non-the-less.
For those interested, here is a little blurb about the difference between snow cones and shaved ice.
About Shave Ice
Hawaiian Ice, also known as Shave ice (not Shaved ice), is much different than a sno-cone, in that it is made by a small counter-top machine that shaves ice rather than grinding it like a sno-cone machine. The result is ice so fine that it rivals real snow! The snow is then placed in a bowl and drenched with tropical flavored syrups. Because the shaved ice is so soft and powdery, the syrup is held within it's texture, versus settling to the bottom like traditional sno-cones. Since the syrup is absorbed into the snow, it must be eaten with a spoon instead of a straw.

Well, I never did find a true shaved ice place. I thought I found one in Gatlinburg so we stopped there. While they were using a shaved ice machine, it came out tasting like a snow cone...so very dissapointing. For those who are interested, it was some sort of arcarde place right off the main drag. If it was actually good I would have bothered remembering the name.
