Hawaiian Cruises: pros/cons.

for the first visit to hawaii, would a cruise have advantages over a land trip? I have about 2 weeks.
Also, is Am. Hawaiian only sea option? Has anyone sailed that line since it changed owners a few yrs ago?

We cruised Hawaii last May. Second trip for us....LOVE IT! We looked into American Hawaii Cruises and found out that those ships are REALLY OLD!! With a land trip you can spend many days on the same island, where as with a cruise, you will be on the same island anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days.
It depends on how much you want to see while you are there. But with a cruise, you can book a pre or post cruise package so that you can pick an island that you would like to spend the most time on and then jump on your cruise ship and visit all the rest. My detective work has showed us that the flights between islands are very expensive, so it was much more affordable to go by cruise ship. We enjoy them mostly I think, because, you do not have to keep packing and unpacking, and after a week or two on the same ship, it starts to feel like home. If you should go by ship, check into the excursions that the ship offers before you go. Many times you can book them on the ship for quite alot of money, step off the ship, and find the exact same tour for half the price, especially the snorkeling and diving trips.
One more thing before I stop, Please read BEWARE Carnival cruises placed on this sight in January, this was a trip to Hawaii. But the Princess and RCCL lines along with alot of others are a fabulous cruise, but stay away from Carnival if they should offer a trip that seems too good to believe, in price. Remember the old saying: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably has a catch to it. Hope you enjoy your trip! Sue

Cruising is a wonderful way to see Hawaii. I agree with the last person - you only have to unpack once and you have an opportunity to see all the islands except Molokai. The food on the ship was OK - not the fabulous food described on other lines, but the activities and beauty of the islands more than made up for that. With the cruise you can also do as much or as little as you like and they do have planned activities that range from staying on the ship to riding in a helicopter or scube diving. The atmosphere is also very casual which I found to be refreshing - no need to dress up unless you wish. This was our honeymoon and was a great experience that I would repeat in a minute. Enjoy.
