After a twenty years, I'm returning to Hawaii in September 28th to October 13, 2010 . A cruise from Oct 2-9, Are there any new attraction that I can check out? Beaches and water sports are not for me. I do not want to rent a car. Would take public transportation and walk. Thanks

Unfortunately public transport is next to non-existent on all islands except Oahu so it would be take a tour or rent the car. The Kauai bus for example does not go to Waimea Canyon nor does it go further than Hanalei (meaning you cannot get to Ke'e beach or the first two miles of the Kalalau trail). I seldom see bus stops and their schedules seem a bit erratic.

Without a car, I'd base on Oahu, right in Waikiki. things to do that are not beach/water sports include:
Doris Duke ShangriLa Estate, Honolulu Academy of the Arts, Bishop Museum, Iolani Palace, the farmers market on Saturday morning down at the community college, and hiking DiamondHead.

Then yes absolutely look into those I've listed!! For ShangiLa estate you want to reserve online, in advance, because the times/days for tours are limited, as are the size of each group they take out to the estate (you meet at Honolulu Academy of the Arts for a short video about Duke's life then go by two small vans out to the estate nearish DiamondHead).
