hello you all ..

i am planning to spend a few months in Oahu this fall, from november on and am hoping to hear form anyone that can help me find a reliable agent..
i hear it is not a good idea to book anything on line, besides, i feel much better talking to a person on the fone and asking my questions etc...

i hear that the real estate rentals go pretty fast in oahu, and i would appreciate your help..

Don't know any rental agents offhand - but I would recommend you google and google to get an idea of what vacation/long term rentals go for - and send emails - even before you talk to an agent, and then - I would call at least a couple of agents.

If you are going to be someplace for a few months - put in the time to carefully research it and get a feel for the prices/locations.

In addition to Honolulu - consider staying over at Kailua.

We have been booking online for years and years and have not had any problems. I wonder who advised you not to do that?

I would pick a budget hotel like Waikiki Sand Villa or the Royal Grove and stay there a couple weeks, and look for a place from there.

Where on Oahu do you want to live? Honolulu/Waikiki will have the most rental options in a concentrated area.

Other friends of mine have booked online - after doing their research - and the also called the owner and manager of where they booked just to make sure everything was in order.

I agree with suze. That way you can get a feel for the neighborhood before signing a contract. There are some dicey neighorhoods in and around Waikiki....it's not all paradise.

i will start googling and having a look of whats there rental cost etc.....
i was thinking of renting in the Waikiki area..hmm
now, i hear theres dicey areas out there, does anyone have names of those areas so that i can avoid them ?

Avoid Kalihi, Chinatown and around Ala Moana areas in Waikiki. Outside avoid Kailua, Ewa Beach, Waimanalo.
Good areas are Manoa, Makaha, Diamond Head,, Pacific Heights, Hawaii Kai

More good advice you ahve received - and I would also chime in with - if you haven't found a place you really feel good about - check into a place for a week when you get there - and you could always extend a second week if necessary - as it's generally not that busy in the fall, and you can get a better idea of where you would like to stay - the location that works best for you, and so forth.

Now - having said that - I still suggest you do as much research as you can ahead of time to have a better idea of the rates, availability, and so forth.

I am guessing that by the 3rd week in Dec - some of the of the "long term" rentals (that can mean a few months or more depending on where you live) might be freeing up/not available to you for the big Christmas/New Year's rush.

i will probably do that and see once i am there whats what..
compared to the other islands, i have chosen Oahu cause it has a lot more to offer ..lots of history and its a good quality time for me to focus and enjoy without rushing..
for yrs, it used to be a 10 day vacation to accommodate ever ones needs !...
it surely is different when one chooses a longer term stay..thats when one gets to explore !..nice
