Going to Hawaii at the end of the month for 8 days and will be spending two days on Oahu and then the remaining days on Kauai staying at the St Regis (gotta love staying on points!). Thanks to all the stars aligning, ideal timing and being with the woman that I want to spend the rest of my life with, I am planning on proposing during this vacation.

I have decided that I plan on waiting to ask until we arrive in Kauai and would welcome any advice that people may have regarding romantic locations to pop the question. My only 'requirements' would be that I want some place scenic and would prefer a place that is not too crowded so that we can have a wonderful memory of the occasion. Thoughts?

have you considered doing the first couple of miles of the NaPali hike?

Lumahai beach would work, as would Secret's Beach - both include short hikes.

Careful at Hideaways beach as I mistook moss for sandstone and ended up with a broken wrist.

you could do an ice cream tasting at tropical dreams and ask her there or at the light house.

you could visit the little green church in Hanalei and do it there if you are spiritually inclined

Is there a full moon while you're there? Find a spot to watch the moonrise over the ocean and plan a picnic on a blanket at the beach. The ring (I assume there will be a ring) will sparkle in the moonlight.

I love littlewing's suggestion of the kalalau trial. Great views about .5 miles up the hill. Or go to Kee Beach and then walk down the beach. It's funny that so few people walk down the beach for solitude. Or hike to the top of Sleeping Giant, nobody will be there and nice views.

Finally one of the prettiest views from any resort in the islands is found at the ST. Regis. it's the view to Bali Hi.

Are you 100% sure she will say yes?
It will be a mighty long trip home if she says no.

Sorry, I can't help with locations. We went to Big Island and Oahu.

Have a plan B in case something happens - eg weather etc.

I like the Hanalei Beach idea, the light is magical at sunset. Lumahai Beach seems pretty secluded, only 4 people there when I was there.

I would caution against doing a long hike before the proposal. The Kalalau (Napali) trail was busy when I was there, and also I was hot, frizzy, sweaty, thirsty, fell and had red dirt on me, etc....I don't think that I would have been in the most romantic mood and the pictures of that most special moment would have been hideous .

Although probably anywhere you do it will be perfect!

The Kalalau trail would not be my pick. It is narrow, steep and rocky with many other people passing you by within inches. Plus after you walk even a short distance up its steep grade, you will both be sweaty. So, IMO, not very private or romantic for a proposal. But a fun hike without proposing.

I hear Fern Grotto is a popular place , but I always thought having her hear it during Helicopter tour would be different.

Again, be very careful with the ring. Here in MA a couple dropped the ring - a family heirloom, on the seaside rocks and have not found it. It is likely gone out with the tide.

All the above are great ideas. (The hike is not my favorite b/c it always seems crowded).

The sunset is beautiful from the St. Regis. There is a green lawn out front where some people gather to view it. It is large space and people seem to respect other people's privacy.

Also, Ke'e is a popular spot (and beautiful). However, if you walk to the right for a while, there are very few people on the beach.

Another vote for Lumahai beach, AKA Nurses beach from South Pacific. Secluded, romantic, deserted. But of course on a twilight cruise around NaPali coast, the sunsets can be magnificant.

I agree that hiking the Kalalau or venturing out to Lumahai at sunset, etc, may not be everyone's idea of romantic.

Sticking close to your hotel's lovely location should do the trick.

I would do a helicopter tour of the Na Pali coast and ask her there. Maybe bring a bottle of champagne along. The views there are incredible. One of our favorite vacation memories.

When we were there last time, we hiked all the way to Hanakapiai Falls, and witnessed a proposal when a girl across the way yelled out and then waved her hand around to show us. At the base of the falls was beautiful, and it can be a quiet place as not too many people make it there.

Another idea - since you are staying on points on the North Shore, splurge with a dinner on the beach.
