True, but the point is why would she ever eat at the hotel? (I never ever eat at a hotel restaurant unless it's included in my stay. I won't spend $24.95 on a hotel buffet when I can walk out the front door and have breakfast for $5.95!).

Marginal, That's exactly the point I was trying to make.
You (anyone, any age) can pick up a nice picnic lunch from the ABC store, for example, a sandwich, cut up fruit, a beverage really reasonable ($5-7). There's loads of places with breakfast specials (again $5-7). For dinner you can get huge, fresh, wonderful local-style food at the Food Courts or Korean BBQ places ($8-12). Even throwing in a snack or ice cream, etc. you're only at $30 per day per person.

There was a time I would have never considered Maui without a car. And then I read a trip report that blew me away. It was a few years ago, and it was the most satisfying happy fulfilled trip report. It was pure bliss.
If you decide Maui might be to your liking and base yourself near a town/beach, well travelling on the shuttles wouldn't suck.
