Sherry, how long is your layover in HNL?

If it was part of a package deal like through Expedia you might get away with short connection times (if you're late then the bump to the next flight is covered) but allow 2 hours if you're booking sep.

even the airports in Hawaii are better than the mainland!

iceeu2 --
We are going to HI in October and AA changed our flights so we arrive in HNL an hour later that original flight. And we too have an immediate flight to Maui. We would arrive after the flight to Maui left, so I called Aloha. I'll leave out all of the details [they were on another thread - possibly yours about flight schedule changes in July].

Aloha told me that based on our arrival at 2:45 pm, we should be okay on a 4:35 flight to Maui. Of course, that was pre-London thing.

I didn't realize that inter-island flights are in a different terminal.
This brings up 3 questions:

#1 Does this mean that we will need to go through security in HNL to get on Aloha plane??

#2 I planned on checking our bags all the way through to Maui, so we won't have to get them from baggage claim and drag them and US over to this other terminal. Does this sound right???

#3 How far is it from [flight from mainland] main terminal to inter-island terminal???

Thanks...
Debi

iceeu2 -- one more thing...Aloha seemed to indicate to me that if you miss your flight...and have to take a different one...it costs $20 a person. That is what the cost was to change it in July when American changed our flights and necessitated the change on Aloha. We did get it waived then, but they told us any other changes [regardless of why] we'd have to pay.

I hope all the other posters are wrong because I, too, have a short connection of 60 minutes on a planned trip to Kauai.
I'm using FF tickets from home to Honolulu but had to get separate interisland tickets. My experience, though, has been good on these connections. Usually we arrive Honolulu early and end up catching an earlier interisland flight than the one booked. Here's my strategy for (hopefully) making it work:
1. Check bags all the way through to Kauai, even though I have two separate tickets. Both flights are on Hawaiian Air, but from different FF programs of partner airlines.
2. Go light with the carry ons, so can move fast. Meds, change of clothes, and SWIMSUIT. Unless things have changed, there is no additional security check between mainland and interisland terminals for passengers arriving by plane. The entry to interisland terminal from the wiki wiki bus is in a secure area.
3. If my luggage doesn't make the connection, go get rental car and return to airport to await next flight.
I've had luggage arrive on different flights than me before. It usually shows up pretty soon. The one time it didn't, airline delivered it to our condo the next day.
4. Pray

Barbara...Thanks for the info about security! One less thing to worry about. Now if AA just doesn't change the flight schedules again.

iceeu2, We arrive in Honolulu at 2:30 p.m. I wanted to get on the 4-something flight to Kona, but it was sold out, so our flight is at 5:20 out of Honolulu, arriving in Kona at 6:01. I wanted to book the 3:17 flight to Kona, but Delta wouldn't let us book it because they said we wouldn't make the connection. We plan to check our luggage all the way through to Kona when we get to the Atlanta airport.

On the way home, we leave Kona at 2:51, arrive Honolulu at 3:30, and then have a 5:30 flight out of Honolulu to Atlanta.

Last year we flew to Honolulu and then on to Kauai. I think we had about 1.5 to 2 hour layover there (both ways). We checked our luggage all the way through, and we had no problems (this was with all 5 of us and LOADS of luggage!)

Also, I'm pretty sure that we've never had to go through security in Honolulu if we're then taking an inter-island flight.

It seems to me that last year it was easier than it was a few years ago to get to the inter-island gates -- maybe we landed at a closer gate? I'm not sure, but it seemed easier this past time.

When are the dates that you're going? I know you've posted it before, but I can't remember. We're going the last part of October.

Just another thought - we booked a longer layover a fews years ago in between Honolulu and Kona and rented a car and hiked up Diamondhead. We made if back in plenty of time and were able to get on the earlier flight to Kona.

In 2004, our flight was delayed 6 hours which we found to be plenty of time to rent a car and go have brunch at Dukes in Waikiki.

A longer layover could give you an opportunity to do a quick side trip in Oahu.

1. for a 3:17 flight, they start boarding 20 minutes earlier and shut the door 5 minutes before, that leaves you about 25 minutes to get from your plane to the gate. if you're on the back of the plane, forget it. take the later flight
2. 45 min. to an hour from south Alii drive to the airport if construction is still going on. kona has the worst traffic problems in the state.
3. you might make it with the #;30 arrival, but your bags won't. you won't have to go through security but do have to pass through agriculture between inter-island and main airport and sometimes that line backs up. play it safe and take the 2:30 arrival.
I was just in Honolulu yesterday and the line through security took 5 minutes (fastest ever and even on a Friday)
