Hawaii/Kauai in December

North Shore way too wet in winter! And the Princeville is really kind of a stuffy place without much tropical ambiance. The lobby is gilt mirrors and marble. Seems more like ancient Rome than Hawaii. Most rooms don't have lanais.
If the South Shore choice is between the Hyatt and Sheraton, you'll need to decide which is more important: beautiful hotel or good beach. I've stayed at the Sheraton. The ONLY thing it has going for it is the beach. Pools (2) very small, just one tiny hot tub full of kids in diapers. Rooms very bland with poor quality linens. I had an expensive "deluxe oceanfront room". Definitely not worth the price.
I would rather stay at the beautiful Hyatt and make the short drive over to Poipu Beach Park to swim in the ocean.
Have you considered the Marriott, on Kalapaki Beach? Excellent beach and grounds; very large, lovely pool; great restaurants, and good location for day trips either north or south.
Perhaps others can comment on room quality since I have only enjoyed the exterior!

You're gonna LOVE Kauai.
At that time of yr, definitely the Hyatt or that end (south side) of the island. The AREA beaches will be warmer and swimmable; the oceanside beach at the Hyatt itsef is not a swimming beach (unless you have a drowning death-wish). But Hyatt's pools are great, and there's a lagoon surrounded by manmade sand there. You're a long walk, or short ride, away from local beaches that are gorgeous, warm, and shoud have ok swimming. And as noted, beaches there that front other resorts (Sheraton, Kiahuna) are equally accessible to guests or the public. (I think there's a law in Hawaii that beaches must have public access.)
Or, as IAMQ & JTRandolph, and others suggested, you could have both the warm weather and golden-sandy beachfront at Kiahuna Plantation. See vrbo.com, castle resorts, or outrigger.com if that intersts you.
JT, I enjoyed your "OH for heaven's sake" tho' don't know if you meant it for the same reason as I ws thinking it.
CN467, please realize that there are Fodorites who have in-joke about how awful Kauai is, etc etc etc thus the comments about chicken recipes, don't go to Kauai--go to Maui, etc. They should issue a disclaimer--but i guess everyone, even a newbie to the forum, is expected to realize some comments are for fun and not to be taken seriously.
