Hawaii, Honolulu or environs
Will be in Honolulu for a week in October. Looking for nice (not break the bank) restaurants. Love casual with a view. Lunch spots and/or dinner. Any ideas for me?
Will also be in Maui (with friends) and Kauai. Any restaurant ideas will be appreciated !
We enjoy local seafood and anything native, except poi. Hmmm!

In Honolulu, I like the Hau Tree Lanai. http://www.kaimana.com/hautreelanai_2.htm
It's on the beach, and you sit under old gnarled trees. I just learned that Robert Louis Stevenson wrote under these trees.
Disclaimer: I've only been once, but it's very pretty, casual, and the food was pleasant.

Duke's at the Marriott in Lihue in Kauai has nice food, has the casual Barefoot Bar downstairs for lunch and dinner and upstairs has more variety, dinner only. Good seafood and beef and really nice salad bar. Also like Scotty's BBQ in Kapa'a, both of these places have nice views and not break the bank $

The Hula Grill on the second floor at the Outrigger Waikiki, smack in the center of everything, is one of my very favorites in Waikiki. Call ahead, (808) 923-4852, a week or two in advance, and ask for a reservation at sunset, on the rail. Open air w/wonderful view, music, food ... love it! (Their mai tai's are great, too!)

"Casual with a view" describes most everyplace that lines Waikiki beach. Just take a stroll down the length of it in the daytime, sometime, and see what looks good to you.
I don't usually eat there myself, as you pay more at the view restaurants. But I go for sunset and a drink somewhere (I like the patio outside Duke's, the terraces at the Sheraton, Hale Koa's beachfront bar, Tiki Bar and Grill, under the banyan tree at the Moana Surfrider, etc. etc. Then I head 'inland' for a less expensive meal at one of the food courts or casual restaurants around.
For a nicer meal I absolutely agree with the very first suggestion of the Hau Tree Lanai.

If you want something casual in Maui, I like the Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina. Outdoor dining with some nice views. As it says in the name of the restaurant, it's Hawaiian cuisine with different combinations in the mixed plates. If I remember, I really enjoyed Kalua Pig and Cabbage.
I have been there a couple of times and like to go for sunset. It can get crowded so maybe go a little earlier but once when they told me it was 45 min, it was really more like 15 min. After dark, you can hear the music from the luau next door.

Speaking of Maui! The people at Aloha Mixed Plate also own Star Noodle. That was one of my best meals there, casually speaking. Really good stuff.

Melissa-Wow Star Noodle looks amazing. Great pictures and descriptions. Defnitely on my list for the next trip. I didn't know that the same people that owned Aloha Mixed Plate also owned Old Lahaina Luau.
