We are on Maui and news from Honolulu reports today, March 19th, although trace amounts have reached California, nothing has been detected in Hawaii. Aloha.

The March 22nd news from Honolulu reported trace amounts have now been detected as with California, the exposure from the trace amounts was compared to less than one would receive on an international flight.

Matt - we are really thinking about it! I am still torn on what to do with the final 3-4 nights - I am not thrilled with my Marriott choices on points on Oahu - and we have actually always wanted to go to the Big Island but sure do love Kauai. When we get to the second half of our trip it is just going to be myself, my husband and 14 year old dd.

And you LIVE in paradise...but I guess you can count down to Maui

eeny, meeny, miney, moe.

Lots of folks like the one in Poipu as they are condos and have more space. The resort in Lihue would have a more central location.

Got our tickets. Got our hotel. 68 days to go, but my daughter and I are going to Sicily in May so that should speed up the passing of the time.

The hotel I chose is the Aston Waikiki Sunset on Paoakalani, a couple of blocks from the beach. Chose it because it is a condominium resort with suites. We will have four people in each suite and need three beds each. The one-br ones have two beds in the bedroom and a pullout queen sofa in the living area as well as a kitchenette. The space should work well for us, but does anyone know about the hotel?

Kal... I am actually looking at that one

Iamq we stayed at the Lihue one and dh really liked it - I thought it was "okay" - not complaining of course but the "bay/beach" it is one left a lot to be desired imo.

MomDD, if you haven't been to the Big Island I'd definitely go on this trip - especially with the 14yo. It's an amazing place and very different from the other islands. Even if the lava is not flowing, seeing the volcano area is just amazing - as is the island itself. It's a great time for the three of you to go.

Kal is right (as much as I hate to admit it). From that Marriott you are walking distance to the Hukilau Lanai where the the meatloaf (yes, meatloaf) with locally grown mushrooms is veddy, veddy good. If they have opakapaka on the menu, order it.

Okay... I think I have finally decided - when I checked over the weekend a room at the Ko Olina timeshare where we are staying for the first 5 nights has come up as available on points and we had an unexpected expense in another area - so we are going to stay on Oahu for the 8 nights. I really wanted to get to another island and Kauai is our favorite but I also REALLy want to see the Big Island but will "make due" with Oahu - really wanted to hang with Kal though...that is two missed gtg! (we were both in SF at the same time a few years ago)
