Hawaii and Las Vegas on a budget. Can it be done?
Hi everyone,
we will be staying in Hawaii at Ohana Reef Towers and at the Mirage in Las Vegas. We have been able to get good deals on our accommodation but due to the terrible Aussie dollar exchange rate, our spending money has taken a dive. Does anyone have any tips for cheap but good tours, dining, car hire, shopping etc
Thanks in advance

You didn't mention how long you planned to stay at each location...As far as Las Vegas goes, there are a lot of inexpensive buffets scattered among the casinos, so food wouldn't be a problem. The airport is also very close to the Strip & part of the fun is walking to see the sights, so a rental car is not needed unless you want to explore outside the city. A very inexpensive trolley also runs the length of the Strip. Your gambling budget would be the issue - also check the prices of any concerts or shows if interested - a lot of them run from $50-90 USDollars. As for Hawaii, it depends on what you're interested in. On Oahu, the Bus runs quite inexpensively, but a rental car gives you more scheduling freedom. If you like history, the Polynesian Cultural Center is a good place to spend a whole day, as well as the sights around Pearl Harbor.

LAS VEGAS:
We've stayed at the Mirage and it is a very nice (and large) property.
For other things to do that are inexpensive or free, visit the website below. Yes, it's written in a very funny style but it contains some real gems of wisdom.

HONOLULU:
Check your rates against what's offered at the following website just to ensure your price is a good one:

Oahu: Free or low cost things to do are listed in the following website:
http://www.rctravel.com/Free%20things%20HNL.htm
Also, for saving money on meals, don't forget to buy the local newspaper. There are often coupons at various restaurants featuring discounts or "2-for-1" meals.
Also good for learning about current events that are free or low cost.
Alamo seems to be consistently recommended by visitors as a good low-cost auto rental agency. Check with your hotel; sometimes they get "special promotional rates" available to guests staying with them.
Alamo's website should be something like this:
www.alamo.com
If that's not it, use a search engine to pull up their website.

We stayed at the Paris Hotel,so be sure to check out the shopping there.
Also go to the shopping area at the Aladdin. It is an experience within itself.
Also, at night the dancing waters at the Bellagoni(might be spelled wrong)
every 15 minutes are neat to watch. The music that goes along with it changes each time. And, this hotel's
lobby is a sight to behold. A famous glass blower did the flowers on the ceiling, go look and go out to the conversatory in back. Also nice, but very expensive shopping area.
The wax museum also is neat to go to.
Don't go to the Blue Man show if you are clastaphobic. But see if you can get into O. (Must get tickets ahead of time) Have Fun!!!

I just got back from entertaining family in Vegas for 1 week. I bought Entertainment books in advance for each 2 persons (buy one-get one free deals), and planned the shows, etc. around their offerings. You can be thoroughly entertained on a budget! We all loved La Cage at the Riviera, comedy clubs are in the book, also, and more! In the case of restaurants, always call ahead and ask whether they still accept the Entertainment Card. Things are in flux in this town, don't allow for disappointment--check it out first.
I say, why eat buffet when you can "fine dine" for 2 for 1! But there are even buffet offers in the book. Buy one for Hawaii, too. LOTS in there for Oahu. You will be pleased.
If you want to see Hoover Dam or some other out-of-town sight, a car or tour is needed, otherwise you will have plenty of stuff to occupy you on your own for your few days there.
In Oahu, you can use the bus to go the whole way around the island.

You may e-mail me for exact coupons in either book if you wish. We are off to Oahu May 21st, too.
