That is correct that only those of us who drive SUVs are the problems on the road. I guess we've been found out.

No, it's not solely SUV drivers.
It's also teens, old people and drunks.
Along with SUV drivers.

Old men with hats are the worst drivers, next are mini-van drivers.

I have experienced it and witnessed it on others on the Palisades Parkway which runs from Fort Lee, New Jersey (at the George Washington Bridge) to Bear Mountain. There's 2 lanes going south and 2 lanes going north without a shoulder and people get very agressive and territorial about their space and the lane they're driving in. Many drivers flash their lights for you to get out of their way or they tailgate. I've noticed the number of roadside memorials growing on this parkway, which can longer handle the volume.

With regards to the road I approach things in a systematic approach, considering my statistics and computer science degrees. I want to know what you all think about this point.

An average driver has a propensity of X for causing an accident.

1X - means normal propensity
3X - means triple normal

Other groups of drivers and their propensities...
1 slightly drunk (.11) 1.5X
2 really drunk (.18) 4X
3 senior citizens 3X
4 poor people 1.5X
5 people who can't speak English 1.2X
6 people on pot 1.4X
7 people on other drugs 5X
8 people who are awake over 18 hours 3X
9 people who eat while driving 2X
10 people on a cell phone 2.2X
11 people who drink (non-alcohol) while driving 1.1X
12 people who smoke while driving 1.7X
13 people with more than two kids in a car 1.3X
14 youthful males 3.2
I got this from a magazine. It is amazing that the law does not go after groups 3, 8, and 9. There are some laws countering group 10 but they are hardly enforced in NY. I see plenty of people on their phones all the time. I also see plenty of the 'silver haired' crowd driving cars that they can barely handle. It is time for normal working people to try their best to fight and keep problem drivers off the road.

I don't claim to be the author of this...it's from an email I rec'd today.

I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver cut
right in front of a pickup truck, causing him to have to drive onto the
shoulder to avoid hitting her.

This evidently angered the driver enough that he hung his arm out
his window and "flipped" the woman off.

"Man, that guy is stupid," I thought to myself. I ALWAYS smile
nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does
anything to me in traffic, and here's why:

I drive 48 miles each way every day to work. That's 96 miles each
day. Of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper. Most of the
bumper-to-bumper is on an 8 lane highway. There are 7 cars every
40 feet for 32 miles.

That works out to be 982 cars every mile, or 31,424 cars. Even
though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper to bumper, figure
I pass at least another 4000 cars. That brings the number to
something like 36,000 cars that I pass every day.

Statistically, half of these are driven by females.

That's 18,000 women drivers!

In any given group of females, 1 in 28 has PMS. That's 642.

According to Cosmopolitan, 70% describe their love life as
dissatisfying or unrewarding. That's 449.

According to the National Institute of Health, 22% of all females
have seriously considered suicide or homicide. That's 98. And 34%
describe men as their biggest problem. That's 33.

According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females
carry weapons, and this number is increasing.

That means that EVERY SINGLE DAY, I drive past at least one female
that has a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem, has
seriously considered suicide or homicide, has PMS, and is armed.

Flip one off? ... I think not.

I have read that of all perpetrators of road rage incidents, FEMALES outnumber males by 56% to 44%!!!!!!!

Something about the psychology of feeling anonymous inside a large protective vehicle empowers them to act in aggressive ways they wouldn't normally act in interpersonal situations.

Ay yay yay, you forgot to add *pregnant* females to your statistics. In 1977 I cut out a guy driving an MG, local roads. He beeped and I gave him the finger (the "finger" was new then!). I then pulled into my apartment complex, but he pulled into the second entrance and swung around til he found me. His 9 months pregnant passenger got out and began screaming at me as I was getting out of my car. She used words this city girl had never heard. Then SHE SLAPPED ME ACROSS THE FACE (not hard though). I couldn't believe it. I looked at her, and said quietly "I feel sorry for your baby" and went around the corner and into my apartment. She got back in the car and they drove away. Then I burst out crying (luckily my husband was home). I will never forget that, and I have never ever given another driver the "finger". Learn from my mistake!

I do not think Jill was in the wrong. She obviously tried to jump in where she felt there was a "gap in traffic that was about 4 car lengths long". Sometimes that is the safest way to get out of a predicament. Yeah driving on the shoulder is not a good idea but in this case she actually probobly prevented a wreck.
One thing I did about 3 years ago was to buy a car that had great accelleration. I splurged and bought a nice German number and several times it has gotten me out of potential conflicts.
There is a joke about 2 men who meet on a one lane bridge in the very middle. There was no way of passing except for one man to move. The first man says "I never move for a damn fool". The second man says "I always do".
