Have visited Kauai on your first trip to Hawaii and then been disappointed when visiting Maui?

We visted both for short periods of time. I think they both have a beauty of there own since they are different in every respect. Having been raised in S. Calif. Maui reminded me to much of S. Calif. the coastline etc. Kauai was a place like no other. I found the terrian, the lush tropical feel to be like nothing else I have ever experienced. For me Kauai awesome and I loved it and would love to return one day. Again they are totally different islands. Both have good and bad.

DH and I have been to Kauai, Maui, BI, and Oahu and each island is different. We love them all. We are going to retire to either Kauai or the BI.
Would we have it any other way? Is New York different than Georgia? Of course!

Well, I've been to Oahu, Maui, Big Island, and Kauai, and like other people, I LOVE them all. I've had different experiences on each one. I do think that Mauai is more commercialized than Kauai, but there are things I love on Mauai that you can't find on Kauai, too.
With that said, I think right now my favorites are Kauai and the Big Island, but I'll happily return to any of them. (And I also want to visit the smaller islands soon, too.)

It all depends what you're looking for. We've been to Kauai, BI and Maui, numerous times, each. We like the BI for the volcanoes and snorkeling, Kauai for hiking. We like Maui the least, due to the commercialization. Never been to Oahu, maybe someday.

Thank you all for your responses. When I ask my sister to explain the Disneyland remark, she said that the Disneyland remark was actually said by my brother-in-law. He says a lot of goofy things. She said that Maui reminded her of a Southern Californian beach. That is pretty much in line with diann24 response. She also mentioned the over-development – in line with other poster’s responses.
I will just have to visit Maui someday and find out for myself.
