Has anyone here ever SOLD a timeshare?

First off, I am not trying to sell this here!

I do Real Estate and a client called me wanting to sell a Hilton timeshare. I have zero knowledge about them, so was trying to direct him elsewhere.

He's tried the company that pitches on late night TV, but was put off by their aggressivness.

Are there "timeshares for sale by owner" sites?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

One is called Redweek and another is http://www.tug2.net/. People also sell on ebay and craig's list.

To my knowledge, the companies that offer to sell ask for a signing/advertising fee and then the seller will never hear from them again.

The above article makes it clear that "they" are a Mexican company fighting timeshare fraud cases. I would be cautious.

I sold my timeshare on Kauai back to Marriott but took a loss, at least I'll get a nice tax write off for 3-4 years.

We sold one in a very good location - by a private broker who was on site - and sold timeshare resales along with other real estate. We enjoyed it over the 25? years - and lost a little bit (couple grand) - and felt good at that.

Virtually all of the other services are pretty much a scam - especially the ones online - or calling from a boiler room - or sending you mail - wanting you to pay up front - as they have a ready buyer in the wings, yada yada, and that is the last you ever hear of them.

You might ask the client how the property is doing - and if it's still strong - you could try putting up a note on the owner's bulletin board - or check to see if there are any real estate brokers in that location who handle timeshare resales.

For most of the timeshares - they have pretty much lost value - but a few primo spots still retain some value.

Marriott has a buy back plan - but not sure if others copied it?

Often the resort of the timeshare one owns will have an on site sales staff that deals with resales. I was just looking into this and the broker/real estate company at the resort that handle timeshare sales will put it on the market and sale it BUT they are asking for a FORTY PERCENT (40%) broker fee.

Our time share unit is selling for almost double what we bought it for back in the mid 1980's. But still we aren't talking big numbers. It went from %7,000 (selling price) to $15,000 (asking price). Not sure what we will get but we aren't going thru that broker-that's for sure!!

nanabee - I am curious. Who is doing the asking for the price of $15,000 and is the $15,000 for a new unit or your particular unit?

We have a unit in Orlando. New phases of the resort are selling for $12,000 - 15,000 but I cannot give my unit away.
