Has anyone gone horseback riding on Maui?????

We are planning our first trip to Maui and would love to go horseback riding.

"Maui Revealed" (and also a couple of Fodors posters I seem to recall) recommends Pony Express at 808-667-2200. They have a four-hour round trip on Sliding Sands Trail to the bottom of Haleakala Crater where you have lunch. The book lists the cost at $155 and recommends you make reservations two to three weeks in advance. I'd love to do that trip, but alas no one else in my family is particularly interested. Good luck!

If you are staying in the Kihei/Wailea area, try Makena Stables. We had a great ride with them -- wonderful horses, great folks!

My husband and I took the trip last summer that sap mentioned after reading about it in "Maui Revealed," which was a great guidebook. It was a great ride, and the crater was absolutely amazing, but unfortunately, we only went about 2/3 of the trail because one of the other riders was hurt with a probable broken hand after her horse slipped on some rocks, so we had to turn back. We ended up having lunch at the top of the crater where we started. The company that booked us the ride refunded the total cost of the trip, so we ended up going on the ride for free! Of course, we felt awful that someone had gotten hurt and would have preferred that the incident had not occurred.
