Harrisburg - alternative airport options

My sister who recently moved to Harrisburg wants to come and visit me in ASheville - problem is airfare from one small airport to another are fairly high. I know she can fly into Greenville or Tri Cities around here but what are her options around Harrisburg?

dulles has good rates - try jet blue. others are phili and reagan.

my sister just flew in from detroit and i from chicago. it was a last minute deal and all airlines were around $1000 from both origin cities. we found a great deal on travelocity; $273 from detroit and $350 from chicago (maybe not great, but much better). both included a car rental, but we only took one. this was on northwest and i connected in to detroit (main hub for NW). the travelocity rate was better than the 'bereavement rate' that norwest offered me. it was under 'last minute getaways' option. what a joke.

another great option is hotwire.com (clearance/discount fares). the only catch is that you need to be totally flexible on your departure dates. they are connected with about 6 airlines and they do not tell you airline or times until you provide your credit card and confirmation. sometimes you can do stand-by's, but you need to call the airline that your ticket gets booked with to be sure. again, the rates are unbeatable as long as you are flexible with the time of day.

Actually, Harrisburg is not that small of an airport -- and the price difference between that and BMI, etc may be outweighed by the inconvenience and expense of driving to Baltimore/DC, traffic and parking etc. Asheville vs. Greenville may not be that different either.

More often than I would admit, there are much cheaper fares than MDT. In addition to BWI, I have used PHL, Newark (Intl), Allentown and even Atlantic City (Spirit).
