Hanalei Bay Resort

I have read some really mixed reviews of HBR but my impression seems to be that of the hotel rooms and not the condos. We are planning on five days on Kauai's north shore, we are a family of six. The north shore really sounds appealing in August but I have a concern that I may be overpaying for the three bedroom condo at HRB if they resort is in a deteriorating condition. Anyone been recently? Thanks, Dawn

Hi Dawn,
We stayed at the HBR last September and I would go back in a heartbeat. We had a one bedroom condo and other than some peeling wallpaper in the bathroom, it was spotless. The grounds and the views are beautiful. I don't know what you are paying but check out if there is an Entertainment rate for the time you'll be there. We paid half the original price we were quoted using this card. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I feel a lot better. Peeling wall paper in the BR I can deal with. We actually found a very good rate also, half of the rack rate. I

I, too, have an interest in The Hanalei Bay Resort. No, I cannot accept "peeling wallpaper" in whatever room it is. Is this a telling description of the premises? It looks wonderful on the website, but lack of maintenance is not very good. I am disappointed that if this true, the site is misrepresented.Any comments on this? Thanks very much.

I stayed at the HBR two years ago. I stayed in a Hotel room over looking Bali Hai and the Ocean. The views are breathtaking, the pool is nice, the retaurant has a wonderful view especially at breakfast. I like it better than the Princeville as it is more relaxed. The room were average in the hotel but the views made up for it. We had trouble with our TV so they gave us a free night. If you get a chance go the the Seafood Buffet at the Princeville (right next door to HBR)it is great. If you will be staying at all on the South Shore Glorias Bed and Breakfast is beautiful your room is almost in the water that is how close it is it. Can you tell I love Kauai??

If that is how you feel, then don't stay at the HBR.
If you do a search on this site for reviews of this hotel, you will see mine. stayed here in 10/00, and had a terrible experience there.
Comparing HBR with The Princeville Resort is like comparing Kmart with Nieman Marcus.
The Princeville Resort is a 5 star resort - HBR is a 3 star time share .
Calling it a resort is a joke-
There is a nice swimming pool, tennis courts, 1 resturant and one bar - that's it - it takes you 1 min to walk the public spaces in the lobby area.
The restaurantand bar closes down at 10 pm. Although the restaurant has wonderful views, the decor of the restaurant reminds me of a cafeteria
There is no poolside service.
Very unprofessional service at the front desk - I had to sign 2 poorly photocopied pieces of paper attesting that I 'know' there is a daily fee to use the room safe, and that there is a fee if you lose your rm key. I have NEVER had to pay for a lost rm key at any hotel or motel I have stayed at.
IF you are paying around $100/nt, and only looking for basic accomodations, then HBR is fine.
I would feel truely ripped off if I paid any more than that.

On the same trip,I had stayed at The Hyatt Kauai for 4 nites before staying at the HBR - WHAT a letdown!!

Aloha Dawn! We've stayed at HBR the last four years, most recently this past August. You won't be diappointed!I've stayed at the Hyatt in Maui. That was a disappointment! If you have any of your young ones interested in surfing there's a guy named Ron who was based at the resort. He'll teach anyone how to surf. My teenage daughter had a blast last summer. Also, for the best snorkeling in Hawaii, Tunnels Beach is about a 20 minute ride from HBR. A great place to take the family for dinner is Zelo's Beach House in Hanalei.Kayaking is available on the Hanalei River. I think the nicest dinner setting is a Duke's Canoe Club which is a 55 minute ride from HBR. It's located at the Marriott. Free valet parking. Beautiful open-air setting. When we were there in August they had a wandering trio sing and playing Hawaiian music.

Dawn,
Don't stay there. It is not professionally run & yes, you will be disappointed. We had a bad experience there. Don't let the website or brochures fool you. We stayed at the Ali'i Kai 2 last year through North Shore Properties 808 826-9622. I would recommend this resort. Wonderful accommodations (no a/c in our unit, but not a problem in August), well cared for property. Beautiful pool, tennis, and small/intimate, & very reasonably priced. I will go back here & would recommend it. It is very close to HBR in the Princeville section of Kauai. You can take a walk or drive to see HBR & it's views without the disappointment of staying there. Princeville resort is very expensive but certainly worth taking a look at. A must see/do is to go to Queen's Bath. We saw huge turtles 2 years ago while there & the scenery & swimming is fantastic. The walk/hike there is not tremendously difficult & well worth it. (Grandma did it last year in beach shoes!) Any questions, feel free to e-mail me. You will love Kauai!
