Gyppie - he knows how to live doesn't he
Bill, glad you and Marteen are back, Where next for you two?
Lovely trip report - as someone said it's rather far from here on the East coast but we have family in NZ, perhaps we could do a stopover on the way back and another trip to CA? Hmmmm... have to think about that plan.

My dearest dearheart gyppielou, you do have a way with words.
Thanks cat. HHM is a special place. Evian spritzers need not apply.

Here are my photos.

What a wonderful trip this was!
The thing that really made this trip for me was meeting many of the local Hana residents and talking story with them. From the aunties at the hotel, to the lady at the art gallery to the surfer at Koki to the ukelele playing coincerage who drive us all over town, they were all wonderful and did not blow phony aloha up our butts. These were real people, in a real place. REAL Hawaii. Hana is not for everyone, as evidenced by the people in the Ranch restuarant grousing about the rain or the honeymooners complaining about no pool service, or the large family overheard complaining about how long it took them to get there and the sand at the beaches was black, but there were those too who "get" Hana and talked about how, "next time we are skipping Wailea and coming directly here." My sentiments exactly. Aloha!

Damn you, iamq!! I looked at your photos!! I can't stand it!!
If you are going back with me in my carryon, you had better bring that black sand. You know that Pele curses anyone who steals her lava and sand to bad luck, don't you?
Unless you go to the BI and throw a bottle of gin into Halemaumau. She's even opened a steam vent there to make it more convenient.
We stayed in Hana once, in the dark ages, (1986) with our 2 kids. But we stayed in the cabins at Wainapanapa. Somewhat lower down on the luxury scale, that.
I have two friends who hula, one in a halau. I love that all ages and all sizes of people are welcome. (That includes me, a "traditionally built" 73 year old, who is taking lessons.) I really love the traditional hula, with only chanting, and I LOVE the men's hulas. Very Powerful!

Oh, those are lovely pictures! That place has Honeymoon written all over it, which is when I think we will go! We had thought about taking all of our kids (we have 6 between us) but I am rethinking that plan, especially after seeing these photos!

Thanks for taking the time to share you pictures and let us all share a little aloha! If only I could convince DH to go to a place with no tv and no phone! I guess could let that be a surprise but I don't want to be there for the withdrawl.

The place looks kinda dumpy. Where's the man made chemical fed landscaping and waterslides? What's with all the natural grasses? Seems like they just let the place go green and don't bother manipulating it into something it's not. What's up with that? I think those other people are right. It is about the journey and not the destination!!! heheheheheheeheheheheheheh! Lahaina mo bettah brah!!!
Mahalo for the joy you've shared. A simply amazing and inspiring report, kind and giving beyond words!

It was truly a dump. No beach at the hotel. No drink and food service at the pool. It was at least a five minute walk from our room to the restaurant. I can't believe they made the place so spread out. No turn down service. No ice machines nearby. They let camera mugging horses roam free all over the property. The coincerage played ukulele while he should have been trying to make me happy. They didn't have the color t-shirt I wanted in my size and didn't do backflips in order to try to get it for me AND there was no fire eater at the hula show! I could go on and on...

Aloha bbq!! Photos are perfect. I grabbed my coffee, put on IZ and kicked my feet up. A lovely start to the week! It was a treat to see the arial shots of the coastline. I'm a sucker for waterfalls.
That horse adored you, buddy! How fun. Did you try for a whale shot? They're hard to get when you never know where they're gonna pop up
Good variety esp of the sea ranch and grounds. Wonderful! Mahalo for sharing.

Hi GoT. I'd love some sand from your neck of the woods!
Just got our piece of art that we bought at the Hana Coast Gallery! It is bark painting by local Maui artist Carla Crow. Her stuff is a modern take on traditional kapa cloth. It will remind us of our fantastic getaway.

Hi,
We spent a day in Hana this Feb and I now feel that I didn't see Hana at all.
We will be on Maui again in a couple of years and will try my best to talk DH to spend at least 3 days in Hana.
