Halekulani Hotel - Okay for a 6 year old

Hello,

I am planning a trip for December 2009 (we are running the Honolulu Marathon) and I would like a great hotel near either the Start or Finish line. Our 6 year old will be with us and I am wondering if anyone has stayed at the Halekulani with young children. I keep reading mix reviews...some say it's a great place for kids others say definitely not.

If not a good place can anyone recommend a hotel that is a bit luxurious? The Start is at Ala Moana Beach Park and the Finish is near Kapiolani Park.

Thanks so much!

Between Ala Moana and Kapiolani Park is not all that big of an area. Truly any Waikiki hotel would fit that requirement.

Hilton Hawaiian Village would be a good choice.

They have some penguins there plus some other things for kids.

It is about 2 miles form Ala Moana Beach Park to Kapiolani Park.

Lots of info including some maps of Waikiki hotels & condos:

We stayed at the Halekulani about 15 years ago, with my daughter who was about 14 mos old. (She was walking.)
I thought the hotel was welcoming to her. We never had any issues with having a child with us. We returned to Hawaii with our two kids two years ago and picked the Hilton Hawaiian village. We stayed in the Ali tower. (this is the nicest of the towers). The hotel was very kid friendly. I would return to either hotel, but with kids would lean to the HHV because the atmosphere was more family oriented.
Now we were at the Halekulani quite a long time ago! But most of the guests seemed to be business people and Japanese honeymooners. I don't remember seeing any other children. The hotel did make a PBJ sandwich for my daughter and sent it up in room service. I remember they didn't have grape jelly and called to ask which jelly the young lady would like. I think they had about 10 to choose from. They delivered it and it cost about 18. dollars plus tax and tips. So, not cheap!
I thought it was a lovely hotel and would not hesitate to go there with or without kids, but the HHV is definitely more relaxed with kids.

We just stayed at the Halekulani hotel. If luxury is what you want, then this is it! There is a DVD player in all rooms so bring your DVDs. Also, having a nice sandy beach right out front is nice. If you walk a little to the right of the beachfront, you will come to a larger beach area fronting Fort DeRussy. There are some snack shops with hot dogs, shave ice, ice cream, etc. Very convenient. We were out there in the late afternoon, and had a great sunset.
