Has anyone done the bike ride down haleakala
recently. With the construction going on,has there been any problems? Is it still worth doing? Thanks for your help.

In Hawaii construction rarely obscures the beauty of any area. Residents and Business owner go up in arms over this sort of thing. It just looks like that ride would make anyone dizzy, around and around you go until you get to the bottom. Do they even stop to look at the silver swords. But what else are you going to do on that island, I know a lot. Looks like fun. I was so out of breath (from the altitude)at the top of Haleakula that I needed to race to the bottom in a car. Don't forget to four wheel it on the back side of Haleakala. ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY. Oh and if you do the road to hana be sure to have a tape in the car explaining everything, along with bird and plant book. Sounds silly but it makes it a richer trip and it tells you when and where to stop for brief hikes into the forest. Sorry I did not do the ride recently as you asked but just do a search. I never hear of anyone in good shape missing that ride and going to Maui. Except of course MEEEE!!!

Yes and Yes. We did it last week. The van will take you to the summit for a look into the crater. Then, everyone gets back into the van and drives down to about the 8,000 foot level. It is still a 30 mile ride. We did the mid-day trip, which meant that we were picked-up @ 8 AM instead of 2 AM. Having done the Sunrise trip on a previous visit, I can say that we enjoyed this trip more. It's also a little less expensive.

jef...we did the ride and due to the lay of the land, I don't think construction will bother the trip. I would recommend doing it your fist night in Maui. You have to get up VERY early and at least on your first night you haven't adjusted to the time change yet so it will be easier for you to get up. Also be sure to take warm clothes..it is very cold up there! The tour operator will supply you with gloves and a rain-type parka, but it is not enough. The bike ride itself is very tame. The Park Rangers don't allow the tour operators to coast down hill at high speeds. As a matter of fact, I thought our group was going too slow, but he Ranger stopped our group and told our guide to slow down even more. Hope this helps soom.

I would highly recommend the trip. Which type of trip really depends on your personality and desires. The one we did was something like Chris's Bike Adventure. They give you real mountain bikes and helmets and let you go at your own pace (fast or slow), they tell you where to go and where to meet up for a few checkpoints or lunch. The Van follows making sure to always be behind the last rider in case of problems.

The other style of tour (Cruiser Bob style) is very organized, they give you cruiser bikes and motorcycle style full face helmets. This type of tour didn't appeal to me at all, in fact we raced right past them with many of the people on that tour looking at us like they wished they were with us.

We picked to go fast becasue that was right for us, other memebers of our tour went slower because that was what they wanted. The bottom line is that everyone got to do what they wanted with full van support if needed. I would recommend this style of tour. There are also a few other outfits that will rent you a bike and give you a ride up, you meet them back at the bike shop.

In any case HAVE FUN.

Last night I booked a Haleakala bike trip with Cruiser Phil's(a company that we had gone with before and really enjoyed) and he told me that the construction is supposed to be finished in two weeks and things should be back to normal. If you are looking for discounts check out maui.org which is the activities owners websites for discounts. Aloha...Barb
