Haines for a day
Our cruise ship will be in Haines mid-August from 6:30 am to 9 pm. Haines is famous for the eagle population but this isn't the season when the eagle population is high. It looks like there is hiking, kayaking, fishing. I'd appreciate hearing about your favorite activities (and activity providers) for a mid-August visit. Thanks.

I was in Haines about 8 or 9 years ago and at that time there were some amazing totem artists working there. There was one guy located in downtown and there was one that I remember that had a workshop in there area around the Fort Seward. I can't remember his name! I actually hung out at his workshop for the afternoon and watched him work. Very cool. If that sort of thing intersts you, ask around when you get there.

The raft trips are excellent, I've also rented a car here to get around. Several small worthwhile museums. Request their visitor guide http://www.haines.ak.us/

Thanks for the Haines city site. I saw a couple companies that have a 2 hour bear watching trip. Have you heard anything about that? Here is a site that combines the bear watching and a raft trip: http://www.dollyvardenalaska.com/Chi...ke%20Combo.htm
Do you know anything about this company? Thanks. Jone

Yes, Dolly Varden is a booking agent, and runs NO tours. Especially in Alaska I always book directly with the venders. Easy to do and no misinformation. The bear watch is a poor choice, not likely to have any sightings in your August timeframe, too early for their late salmon run. Even end of Sept. is iffy at best. They are early morning and late afternoon eaters anyway.
