Guide me wise travel friends-driving trip from IL to SC
Well, I'm going to be packing up the car in September and heading down to Litchfield beach in SC for a week of R&R. I've never driven through that part of the US and would love some tips/advice on what not to miss.
Know great food places, stores, sights, historical markers, tacky tourist stops and everything in between????
I bow to your infinite knowledge which will help me on my road trip.

Where in Illinois? Do you want directions?
Litchfield is beautiful. Are you golfers? Great golf courses. You are an hour and a half from Charleston--a great day trip. You are across the road from Brookgreen Gardens, a beautiful plantation/garden site.
The best seafood restaurants on the entire coast are just north of Litchfield in Murrell's Inlet, along with a couple of restaurants that are just outside the gates in Pawley's Island.
If you must, go up to Myrtle Beach. So do you want any directions? I can get you to Litchfield quicker, I believe.

Gretchen,
I believe you have previously recommended Murrells Inlet restaurants generally. Could you narrow that down some; do you have some favorites?
We have tried Flo's Place (liked), Bovine's (not that impressed), and I had lunch at Nances (but it was with a group, so probably not really representative). Although we live in--egads!--Myrtle Beach, we sometimes find that we must (insert smiley face here) venture south to those more refined locales.

GoTravel,
thanks for the great suggestions!
We had lunch at the Fish Camp Bar (my reward for toughing it out while my wife tried on many, many pairs of shoes at Island Shoes). It was great!
We had reservations at Frank's the first year we lived here--unfortunately it was during the Memorial Day bike fest (we lived in North Myrtle at the time). We somehow failed to allow for the approx. 4 hours it would have taken to get to Frank's and had to cancel. We must make amends.
Cafe Lucia in Pawley's got a good review in the Sun News recently--have you tried that?
