Grit in the salad

We had a disappointing meal at Trattoria Mollie in Montecito, which is highly touted by celebrities who live in the Santa Barbara area. I crunched on grit in my arugula and shaved parmesan salad, took another bite just to make sure, and had my husband try it, too. We summoned the waiter, who took it away and came back to argue, saying the chef said to tell me it was ground pepper in the dressing! As if I don't know the difference between ground pepper (which I love) and grit. Besides, there was no dressing, it was simply olive oil. I told the waiter that it was grit and he said, "If you say so, ma'am." I didn't want to make a scene, so I dropped it. Mollie's is very expensive and the food isn't anything special. For this price, I don't want insolence from a waiter and I expect my greens to be rinsed. I would recommend Tutti or Palazzio in the same neighborhood instead.
