Thanks for your comment, Dfrostnh! I’m glad I’ve now spent a few nights in both upper New England state capitals Concord NH + Montpelier VT, which might be an idea for some to have coupled together as part of the same trip.

Hi, Daniel T
I hadn't checked the US forum recently and only just saw this TR.
I live near Montpelier and am glad that you had a good visit.
I tend to take Hubbard Park for granted but you are right that it is a real asset to the city. It's the venue for regular family-friendly summer concerts, sledding and other activities. Today All Species Day celebrations start there with "Calling All Species, arrival of the Stag King" and line up for a parade through Montpelier.
I'm glad that you were able to visit the State House and Historical Society museum.
You didn't mention restaurants so maybe you didn't have any particularly good meals? If you come again I could give you suggestions.
Burlington would also make a nice short trip but unfortunately the downtown hotels are quite pricey so it would be harder to stay somewhere and walk to everything. There might be some more affordable b and bs.
Montpelier was really devastated by the flooding in 2023 but it has bounced back in the past few years. It really is a charming small city

Hi vttraveler
Nice to hear from you! I recollect you recommended Montpelier to me when I visited Concord in ‘23 but to give a bit of time for recovery from the flood. And here we are 😊. It is true in my trip reports where I like to focus on “discovery”, I tend to write minimally about restaurants; only exceptions are if I try a new dish or have a new experience somehow. I went to Capitol Grounds for breakfast where I lingered with coffee and did some work. For lunch, I went to Capital Pho one day for pho and Buddy’s Famous the next for a burger. Got a pozole at Chico’s and a fish sandwich at the charming pub Three Penny Tearoom for supper. CG, CP and TPT in particular had a sociable and friendly energy about them when I went. While content during my meals, nothing struck me as noteworthy enough to mention in my report. Funny story, some Vermont Maple Cookies were advertised in a storefront in a lovely box depicting Vermont images—I purchased them with curiosity albeit hurriedly and laughed to myself later when I saw on the box it said “Made in Canada”.
The central Burlington hotels I agree are often discouragingly pricy, however seemed to have uncharacteristically reasonable prices too Easter weekend. I was tempted but went with Montpelier instead.
Best wishes, Daniel

That's funny that the Vermont Maple cookies were made in Canada!
One of the sugar houses at the very outskirts of Montpelier has developed quite a tourist trade. There is information about how the syrup is made plus lots of maple and other Vermont products, some animals for kids to see, etc. Lots of tour buses stop there especially in foliage season.
I'm glad that you found decent food to eat during your stay. I know that you have many excellent restaurants in Montreal and that you didn't travel to Vermont for the food options.
